My oldest ds is in 6th grade this year, and I am beginning to suspect that he has some sort of language processing disorder. I don't think it's auditory processing. He has equal trouble between watching TV/movies (though those things are a bit better) and reading. His comprehension STINKS. Frowner

He did the UG level last year, and it was sketchy at best. This year it is more of the same. He just isn't comprehending much of the reading. He did the Flavius worksheet last week on cause and effect and Eeker it was not pretty. He just doesn't get it.

I know there will be absolutely no way he could handle D next year, so I'm not even going to go there. But for this year...what should I do with him??? I have 3 other LG students - should I just include him in our read-aloud time? Should I include some of the UG books in with the read alouds for the younger kids too, especially on weeks where the LG assignments are lighter?

I'm just not sure at all what to do with him, and he is frustrated too.

(This is all WHILE I will be attempting to figure out just where to take him for an evaluation, etc.)

Hi Kirstin,
Yes, I'd certainly include him in your read-aloud time. And, yes, I'd suggest having him do a *section* of the book independently. If you have Writing Aids, you might think about following the suggestions for "Summarizing" in order to help him with the comprehension. When he gets to where he can handle one section, give him two, etc.

Hope this helps...
