I thought I'd post what I did to find the DE on my Mac. I'm not especially computer savvy, so it took me a bit to get it all together. In case any other Mac users would benefit, here goes!
Once I had registered, which went great, and put the DE in my basket on TOG's website and checked out, which went great, I hit the Unit 3 link on the confirmation page of checkout to download the unit. It downloaded something with a ".dmg" extension, which I had no idea about. When I double-clicked it, nothing happened. So, I googled it and found out that .dmg means Macs see it as an actual disk or drive, and the .dmg thing was showing up on the top left side of my Finder window under the "Devices" heading as an actual disk, just like my harddrive. It was cleverly named "Disk Image". I clicked on Disk Image and saw a folder named "config". I opened that folder and saw several other mystical folders. When I opened the one called "pdcs" I found a document entitled "Y3U3.pdc" and that is my Unit 3. I double-clicked on that, and LockLizard (is that what it's called?!) opened up my Unit 3 file. There is also a .pdc file called Y3U3U1.pdc, but it was merely the 10-page introduction to Unit 3, which was included in the bigger and complete Unit 3 file (Y3U3.pdc). In addition, each individual week plan is listed in the "pdcs" folder so that you can access each individual week plan without having to have all 550 pages of Unit 3 open to bulk things up. They're clearly marked, so week 19 is called "3-19.pdc". I couldn't save that Unit 3 file, so that must mean that I use the newly installed disk called "Disk Image" to open Unit 3 every time. So, did I do it the hard way? Any other Macs do it much easier? Usually everything is so easy on a Mac--you hit a button and it's all there complete with no work. Makes me think I missed a step with this whole thing! If I did do it the hard way, would the TOG people please delete this post so I don't confuse everybody else?! Thankful for a great curriculum, Deanna |

I'll be the first to admit that I'm far from a Mac expert. The last Mac I used was a Mac Plus twenty years ago
But, if you want to see Tapestry DE the way it was meant to be seen, When you click on "Disk Image", instead of going to the "config" folder, open the index file. That wonderful interface (all the work of David Somerville!) is a lot easier to work with than the config folder. Hope this helps! |

When I open the index.htm file that is in the config folder, it opens to the Year 3 DE TOG webpage. From there I hit Unit 3, and on the right side in a column the weeks of Year 3 are shown. When I click on a week, it reveals a submenu-type thing giving the name of the week, i.e. Week 19 reveals a book icon with "Westerners in Asia" beside it. When I click on "Westerners in Asia" or the title for any other week of Year 3, it opens up the pdcs folder as described in my original message. From there I still have to manually open each week plan. So, basically, I end up at the exact same folder location as in my original e-mail, but I got to it much less directly. I'm guessing the interface isn't supposed to do this? Should it open straight to the week-plan data, and not the pdcs folder?
I've done a quick search on the web and apple's page for help with pdc's, wondering if I might have set up my preferences somewhere to cause this, but the info I found seems to be directed towards the truly impressive computer geeks who are offering pdc's, and not people like me who are just using pdc's. I don't remember dealing with pdc files in any previous preference things I did. Regardless of whether this is the way the interface is supposed to work, I can still access all the files! Any info would be appreciated, and thanks for your work! Deanna |

You're exactly right, Deanna. That's the beauty of the way this is set up. If you want to go directly to the week-plan (or a particular Loom document once those are on there for year 3) you can do that ... or you can go through the interface. You can get to what you want, however you want.

Deanna,
I just found out that I can open the whole unit instead of only one week at a time, if that helps you any. On the page with the weeks on the right, there is a "Browse the full unit" on the left. Janet, wife to 1, mom to 10 1graduated, 1R, 3D, 1UG, 3LG, 1little |

Deanna,
That's exactly how mine works. What I've been wondering is how to get it off my desktop? I copied everything to a folder in my hard drive, but I was a little hesitant to put the TOG device in the trash. S- |

The TOG device is seen as an external disk, and i've never known of a disk that can be stored somewhere else on the computer. They pretty much either stay in the Devices section of Finder, showing up also on the desktop, or they are ejected and are no more. I was hesitant to eject the device, also, but the Lizard stuff said that once you had registered you were registered for good. I thought that probably meant that if I ejected the Disk, I could easily download it again from Lizard People and continue on. But, like you, I'm hesitant to do anything until I know for sure!
We've just started Unit 1 of Year 3, so i have a long time to ponder all this before it becomes necessary! Hope you have a very blessed Christmas! Deanna |
