Is anyone else struggling with MapAids and the recommended labels from the TOG manuals? I am growing more frustrated as the weeks go by that the MapAids teacher answer maps don't have everything on there that the TOG pages say we are to label. I have pre-made printed clear labels that I was all excited to use, but we spend LOTS and LOTS of time every week looking in all sorts of books to try to find these things and on many occasions we simly give up because we can't find them. I ***greatly wish*** the MapAids teacher answer maps would match the TOG pages. I know I know - I need to teach my children to use all sorts of map resources and we are doing that. I just wish I had the answers also at my fingertips so I could be a better resource for my children.
Any thoughts? Are there any plans to synch MapAids with TOG recommended labels better? Thanks. Deb |

Which YP are you using, Classic or Redesigned?

Redesigned
And actually, it's amazing what a night of sleep will do. I just spent over an hour going through each map comparing TOG to MapAids through week 15 and see that the problem truly isn't as bad as I was making it out to be, and I apologize. I am also using labels generously made by another mom and I've just learned she did not include alternative names for some of the locations - so that threw us off as well. The maps on which we got hung up were: (and excuse my ignorance - you are going to see I won no geography bees in my youth) Map 6 - Is Gilead and Mt. Gilead the same thing? Map 11 - Could not see a place to label Tibet, Himalayan Mountains, Mt. Everest and is Manchuria and the Manchurian Plains the same thing? Map 13 - First, my co-op friends have mentioned that this map is not truly Classical Greece. (Should it be labeled Ancient Greece? I don't know.) I could not find the following things on the teacher answer map: Hellas, Acaia, Skamander River, Mt. Mimas and Doulikhon Map 15 - these things weren't on the teacher answer map: Coastal Plains, Western Mountains, Jordan Rift, Eastern Plateau & Arabian Desert. Also for week 15, since there was so much discussion about who and where Joshua conquered, it would have been beneficial to have a map of the people groups that already existed there. I found one on the TOG website but I'm spoiled by how nice the MapAids maps look. That's as far as we are in Year 1. Again, I apologize for making this sound like a bigger deal than it acutally is. Overall, I am very pleased with the geography in TOG. I just get very overwhelmed on a regular basis using TOG, never feeling like I'm covering enough or the right things, and my children pick up on my insecurities and then start to doubt my leadership. So when little things like map labels don't match up, I lose them altogether. I am trying not to throw the answer map at them every week - in fact I only do that as a last resort. But when I do need to do that, I assume every recommended label will be there. Thanks for listening and I hope my little bits of feedback can help fine tune MapAids to TOG just a bit. Deb |

Deb if it makes you feel better, I've noticed this too.
For TOG folks, you may wish to have the Map Aids folks take a look at this for you. BUT for Deb, if it isn't on my teacher's map and isn't in either of the two history books used in UG or D (for some reason the UG books have better maps) then we just, gasp, skip it. I mean how important could it be? Lewis "One of the major flaws in some forms of reader-response criticism is that they tend to ignore the compact between author and audience, overlook that the author had some purpose and information to convey when he wrote the document, and assume that it is the reader who can and must decide what sorts of things, including what sort of meaning, one can derive from a text." Hi,
Yes, there are some typos and errors on the Year 1 MapAids disk. About two months ago or so, I went through every label on the disk and sent a list of corrections to the MapAids folks. They have now corrected these issues, which doesn't help you much, but the new ones we are sending out have these corrections. Yes, Pat, that's the way I do it too. If we really labor over finding a label and still can't find it, we skip it. I too am struggling with the MapAids and recommended labels from the TOG manuals. I have 2 children who are using the maps this year and have 3 children who will be using it in future years. I bought the redesigned YP with the idea of investing the money once (now) and being able to use it with all of the children. I was wondering since there are admitted discrepancies with the MapAids that I have and they apparently have corrected them can I get an updated/corrected version of the MapAids for free?

Hello everybody! We are going to be discussing this in our staff meeting tomorrow, and someone will respond with an answer sometime in the afternoon.

Hi,
We are currently trying to come up with a workable solution that will benefit our users, but it may take a few days. We'll do our best to let you know something asap. Blessings, Dana C. in TN "Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. I will proclaim the name of the Lord. We have reviewed the errata with the Year 1 disc and feel that most of the problems stem from having one disc that serves both Classic and Redesigned customers. For the latter, especially, though we did very little editing, what we did do caused small discrepancies that can get disheartening if you don't know where to find them. We've been in contact with Terri Johnson of Knowlegequest Maps, who is sympathetic to the difficulties and in partnership, we are offering two "fixes" for you.
OPTION #1: We will post, in the next week to ten days, on the Year 1 ONLINE LOOM interface, a simple list of errata, which mostly amount to labels that are missing from Teacher's answer maps. You can print/review this list for FREE, and either find the labels yourself in an atlas or simply excuse your children from this part of the assignment, if they are doing self-corrections. This will free you from uncertainty as to where the errors might be, and not cost you any money. OPTION #2: If you purchased MapAids 1 new from Lampstand Press before November 1 of 2007, you can call Lampstand Press AFTER FEBRUARY 5 and request a replacement disc for $3.00 (including shipping). The new discs will be mailed via first class mail, but you must order them via phone, and only after February 5. Please allow two weeks for delivery of your updated CD. To emphasize: you must have purchased your MapAids 1 from Lampstand, and must wait until after February 5 to call (because we need to put systems and products in place until then) and request a replacement disc, for which you will be charged $3.00 (including shipping). We, and the good folks at Knowledgequest Maps, hope this satisfies all our customers' needs and helps you to have a more joyous school year. Wow Marcia- $3 -- that is fantastic- I must confess though that at first I read $30 and said - "OH MY" -- but slowed down and found the awesome $3 offer. Guess sometimes speed reading isn't always a plus eh???
