I worked on this project last summer so that I could do a co-op using the play. There are only two available DVDs of Julius Caesar.

One made in the 50s using Charlton Heston. It was made before his debut. This was not my favorite. It has a very film noir feel to it. Often you see the character looking serious while the lines are his thoughts: heard but not spoken.

The other production was made with Marlon Brando and has much better production values in terms of sets and costumes.

Both feature the two stars as Antony and in the race scene early in the play, you may or may not consider him modestly attired. It's kind of at swimsuit level. Both also feature some violence at various death scenes but it is not graphic compared to violence of today's movies, but you may wish to preview those (although you can get away with JC's death because the later deaths are similar).

We just finished watching the Marlon Brando version...my favorite!!! I had a comic book version of the play from my teaching files (I taught this play for 5 years normally 3 or 4 classes each year!)and I had my boys (5th adn 7th) read it to have an idea of the plot so the language would not throw them so much. We watched it over 3 days, discussing famous lines, important plots and I STILL love Marlon Brando's masterful funeral speech. The end is boring. I always just watched the funeral speech section in class with my students. Anyway, we had a blast and the boys enjoyed it.. Talking to my husband my oldest said, "Yes, I didn't understand everything the said, Dad," looking at me, "It was all Greek to me!" (A famous line from the play.)

I have a documentary about Julius Caesar's Rome. I will let you know if it is any good.

Well we watched disc 1 of the history channel's Julius Caesar's Rome. The first documentary about JC was fine. However, the 2nd one about Antony and Cleopatra and TONS of painting with fully nude ladies in them... So don't watch that one.
