I just wanted to make sure I understood correctly. I did find the link to the marks. HOWEVER, I think when they say use self-proofing sheets we were all thinking of what is in the writing workshop cd I have. It has small samples for levels 3 and 9, I think. I think we were all thinking of something like this:
Did you make sure that all sentences start with a capital letter? Did you check the spelling on any words you didn't know for sure? Did you capitalize proper nouns? Is something like that anywhere on the website that we can give our children to have them proofread each assignment? She gives small samples on the handouts for the workshop, but the instructions in writing aids does make it sound like there is some self-proofing sheet the students can use, not just a list of marks. Does my question make sense? I'm going to need something like that for next week, so I need to know whether it exists or whether I should make it on my own this week to use for next week. Thanks. Christine,
The self-proofing chart is on the beta-version page of Writing Aids in the Steps in the Writing Process section. However, it is the same info that is contained in the writing workshop handouts (level 3 and level 9). I'll try to paste the self-proofing sheets I made for my dc. I compiled the checklists from various sections of Writing Aids. Here is UG: SELF PROOFING CHECKLIST UPPER GRAMMAR LEVEL Check each sentence. Did you: Capitalize the first word of every sentence? Punctuate each sentence correctly at the end? Write a complete sentence, with a subject and verb that agree? Choose vivid and specific words? Spell each word correctly? Write sentences with the length and level of complexity that your teacher has assigned? Check each paragraph. Did you: Hand in completed prewriting with the draft? Capitalize the first word of every sentence? Punctuate each sentence correctly at the end? Indent your paragraph? Start the paragraph with a topic sentence? Do all body sentences relate to the topic sentence? Does the paragraph have a conclusion—a sense of ending? If you wrote more than one paragraph, did you: Join them together so that your ideas flow logically for the reader? Here is D/R: SELF PROOFING CHECKLIST DIALECTIC AND RHETORIC LEVEL Check each sentence. Did you: Capitalize the first word of every sentence? Punctuate each sentence correctly at the end? Write a complete sentence, with a subject and verb that agree? Choose vivid and specific words? Spell each word correctly? Write sentences with the length and level of complexity that your teacher has assigned? Check each paragraph: Are all paragraphs indented? Does each paragraph have a clear topic sentence near the beginning of the paragraph? In each paragraph, do all body sentences relate to the main idea and carry the paragraph’s overall argu¬ment forward? Does each paragraph have a conclusion which ties it back to the overall topic of the paper? Does the paper flow well? Have you included transition words, phrases, or sentences in order to lead the reader carefully through all the ideas in the paper? HTH!
