I am very interested in this curriculum for all the reasons that you already know it is such a great resource. I have a gifted 4yo going through kindergarten right now, who I want to start with a classical curriculum next year. I am Christian and very much want a bible-based history curriculum, so I was so excited to find TOG that has that, but that I can adjust to my daughter's different levels in reading and writing.

My concern with any history curriculum is to find something that will not be hostile to our faith and beliefs and will treat all religions with the utmost of respect. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormon). I must commend you, as after I have pored over all of the online information and samples and have not found anything at all offensive to any religion. However, in the interest of my children, I felt that I needed to get more information.

I do not have any problem with my children learning what others believe. I believe that God wants us all to work together for this world and that we all have to respect each other's beliefs in order to do that. Furthermore, I am one who prefers to dwell on our common ground rather than our differences. I just want to make sure that my children are not going to encounter anything that is hostile to our beliefs or the church that we belong to.

At the dialectic level they use one book on US history for a very long time (several years). It includes a harsh chapter on the LDS faith. You can view this chapter:

This would only be used one week and you could rip out the chapter or you could plan to discuss it since at that level you'll be discussing other weighty matters on religion.

You may also find that the church history books don't view church history the same way you do.

Thanks for sharing this. Actually, I don't see it as very harsh. There is clear bias, but history is always biased, so that doesn't bother me. What bothers me are some very important omissions. It would seem very relevant, in the interest of full disclosure and the pursuit of truth, that as many times as Joseph Smith was arrested, he was never convicted of a crime; and additionally that he and his brother were murdered by a mob while they were in prison.

Also, this book must be very old, since there are now 12 million members (much more than the 300,000 cited in the book).

At any rate, thank you very much for your reply.
