Hi there, I am starting to research TOG and had a question regarding the pace of week to week topics.
I was browsing through the Year 1 units, i see that Unit 1 covers this historical section quite fully but was wondering when I saw Weeks, 1 and 2 of the next Unit2... What is the pace like from week to week? Are the topics covered fully and comprehensively or are they rushed through? Has anyone dragged the topics out longer than the suggested week by week schedule? Thank you kindly Living the dream in the Cook Islands.... |

If case if you feel that the schedule is too fast for you, especially if you have younger kids, click on the "Flexible education" link on the left of this page:

You can do whatever you wish to do.. This past year we did Year 2. My boys had never studied the Middle Ages and so we spent 18 weeks on that first unit instead of 9. For the Renaissance we spent 12 weeks instead of 9. For both of those units I utitlized the extra resources and we just thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in it. Unit 3 we basically took as written, though we did combine a few weeks. Then Unit 4 which covered the time leading up to and The American Revolution we rushed through. They had already studied that in detail in another curriculum. Plus, we have been to many of the sites and we own several History Channel DVD's about that time period. We combined what TOG covered in 2 to 3 weeks into one. They basically just looked up whatever answers they didn't know. (They knew most of them and had already read all of the literature selections in unit 4 before.) That is one thing I love, love, love about this curriculum. If you want to savor something, then stretch it out. If you want to speed it up, then do so. It is up to you.

My understanding is that TOG is scheduled by the R level which in the first year because of the dearth of books on some ancient cultures causes the lower levels to not be as full in those weeks.

Tapestry is indeed written at the pace that high school students need in order to cover the material in a four-year time frame. That said, as you read above, families with students in just lower levels can always dictate their own pace. I don't think that lower levels in Year 1 have lighter loads, per se. We think they will tend to use more of the hands-on projects than they might in future years in some weeks, but the bible survey takes up a lot of time in that year-plan, making it plenty full for students on all levels.
