My son is bordering on Upper Grammar-Dialectic and I love the teachers notes for self education. Every now and then I read some of the rhetoric level books for myself too.

I'm considering year 3 because I've really gotten into the Impressionist Artists and the things that were going on in their time period, however I'm a bit concerned about buying year 3. My concern is mainly because Y3 spends an entire year for one century. I know lots happened during those 100 years, however looking through the Week Lists on the main TOG site, it looks like the primary focus is American History, with a little bit of English history sprinkled in.

Is that the case? Does year 3 go into other countries as well or just American & English?

Thanks in advance.

As I recall there is time spent studying Austraila, the British Empire, Napoleon, the Crimean War, New Zealand (briefly), and Africa.

I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting this time period was. I wasn't looking forward to Year 3 and Year 4 as much because I had always thought these periods were not as exciting as Ancient and Medievel history. Boy was I wrong! Now I am really looking forward to Year 4!

Hope that helps,

Lisa W.

In addition to those mentioned above, I'm pretty sure the following topics are also studied, at least at the Rhetoric level:

1. Russia and the Emancipation of the Peasants in 1861.

2. Simon Bolivar and the liberation of South America (younger students do this as well)

3. The Unification of Germany (1871) and its separation from Italy

4. I want to say that there is something on India, too... I think it's a biography on William Carey (first missionary to India) in the Church History section.

5. Some studies on Western trade with Japan and China.

HTH!

In Unit 1 half of the themes were around Europe and South America (3 weeks on South America).
In Unit 2 about 3 weeks on Victorian England, including Australia.
In Unit 3 there was 2 weeks on East Asia and then Crimean War.
Unit 4 has 3 weeks on Africa.
Also, there were weeks on inventions and industrial development, which was inter-cultural.

Also, a lot of the missionary stories in the worldview-church history.

We did "additional" studies on animals in South America (also on rain forests), Australia and Africa while studying Year 3, and on Victorian England. Geography part connected to these weeks was very exciting for my LG and UG kids.

Jeff Corwin's videos were great!!!
