Greetings~ I used TOG 1 with 3 daughters last year, the oldest being in 9th grade. My youngers were discouraged (my fault), so this year I (sadly) used other things. My now 10th grader used a worldview program this year that was 'similar' to TOG, but she basically stayed in the Ancients for another year. Now that I am trying to make sense of her transcripts, I am crying with shame at my lack of wisdom in shifting her high school away from TOG. I want to return her to TOG for 11th-12th, but I don't know how to bridge a 3 year gap in only 2 years. Please, dear ladies, can you help? I feel like such a failure. Thank you for any suggestions you can offer~

I don't *think* any state (or college) requires every period of history to be taught in high school. You could go through the units of years 2-4 and choose what you feel is most important for your daughter to learn. Or just get as far as you can starting with Year 2 and going forward. I don't remember much about history in high school and I've managed to live a productive and fulfilling life. :-)
Just this morning during my quiet time I realized that whenever I think of "man's requirements for education" I feel overwhelmed, guilty and inadequate. Whenever I think of "God's requirements" I feel peaceful, joyful and excited about the year to come. Take time to pray about what YOUR family needs and how God can restore and meet your needs above all that you could ask or think. Blessings to you and your family, Charlotte, mom of 12, ages 3-27 24th year of homeschooling 4th year of Tapestry |

Hi Ginger,
I totally agree with fruitvine -- and don't focus your energy on the past. (You can't change what's already been done but you CAN put your best foot forward this year and next year.) That being said, I just wanted you to know that I, too, stepped away from TOG for a season and it didn't go so well. This fall we will embark with TOG Redesigned Y2 -- and we can't wait. TOG is such a huge blessing for our family!! ~Amy (homeschooling K,J, & EJ for the Lord) |

Thank you ladies, for your kind words. I have been thinking about trying to do *half* of Y2 with her this fall, and jumping into Y3 in the new year. I don't know if that is even possible, but I already own both of them so it's worth looking at. Blessings to you~

Hi Ginger,
I know a lot of people do Y2 in "halves"...in fact, a friend of mine is doing that with her co-op this year. I think you're on the right track... Take a deep breath -- and remember to rely on the Lord's strength!! ~Amy (homeschooling K,J, & EJ for the Lord) |

I agree that no school will look for you to fill that historical gap.
Because most students have covered settlement and the revolution in the past, I would start with Year Three and do Year Four. I think both those time periods are less well covered in most schools (home, public or private). |

Dear Ginger,
I would agree with Pat's recommendation to start with Year 3 and then do Year 4. Those two year plans are crucial for a good understanding of the times in which we live. Have a wonderful school year! Susan in La Mom to 16yods (R), 15yods (R), 12yo dd (D), 11yo dd (D) Redesigned 4 “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Gen. 1:28) |

Ladies~
Do you know how helpful you've all been? I hope so! I got my brand new Y2 out of it's box last night (I had bought it last year, planning to use it) and looked through half of it. Since my dd is an avid reader and never likes to 'skip' anything, I thought that I could take the week's literature and core history readings only, and compress them into a semester. That way she will have had some coverage of the time period for her own peace of mind. I looked at the Loom helps for transcript development and saw a plan for us developing! So Praise God. Thank you again for the hand holding. Ginger |

Ginger, as a mom who reads some of the literature readings, I'm not sure that you'll be able to do all the literature readings in such a short time period. If you wish to do this, I'd use the most trimmed list TOG suggest for Year Two. Pat "The first qualification for judging any piece of workmanship from a corkscrew to a cathedral is to know what it is — what it was intended to do and how it is meant to be used." C.S. Lewis "One of the major flaws in some forms of reader-response criticism is that they tend to ignore the compact between author and audience, overlook that the author had some purpose and information to convey when he wrote the document, and assume that it is the reader who can and must decide what sorts of things, including what sort of meaning, one can derive from a text." Thank you, Pat. Is there a suggested list somewhere for condensing the readings? It may be right in front of me, but I haven't run across it. I am sure a list would be a great help to me. Blessings~ |

It's in the Loom somewhere. Maybe under literature helps?? (Can you tell I haven't looked for it lately?)
