My daughter is in 7th grade and is haveing to spend a few hours on the church history assignments each week, we are in our 3rd week of school. Anyone else experiencing this and have any suggestions. She is a bright student and independent but struggle with content and answering questions in a timely fashion.

Hello Becky,
Could you sit with your daughter and do the reading and discussion with her? Some people really need to process more challenging content orally and aurally in order to cement the ideas. I helped a friend's college age daughter last year with biology this way - she just needed to talk about concepts to understand. Reading alone wasn't enough. Do you think your daughter would benefit from that approach as well? Doing the readings with her would give you a chance to discuss your own views in context as well. Hope this helps! Blessings, April |

My D children did much better with their church history book when I started picking and choosing the questions they had to answer. I can't even find some of the answers to the questions, because they require other resources that we don't have.

Laurie,
We agree that those questions are too challenging for students on that level to answer in toto. This is why we caveat with the direction for you to direct her on which ones to answer. Blessings, Marcia No one can do me a greater kindness in this world than to pray for me. --Charles Spurgeon |

Marcia, is that just a general caveat for all of TOG or is it specific for this subject and year plan - I can not find where that is written. One of the reasons I love Tapestry is because so much of the work is done for me so that I do not have to come up with questions and read all the material myself. You seem to be saying that in this case, I will need to go through the material and figure out which questions are reasonable to ask my D dd to answer. Can you clarify for me? Thanks so much!

In this case, the caveat is found in the student's assignment pages; directions for church history say to find out from your teacher which questions to answer.
As much as it would be nice for ALL the work to be done for us, that won't happen. One thing that I do when I don't have time to make these decisions myself is to try to find a way to put it on the students. For example, I might ask them to answer three questions of their choice. Hi This is more of a question to your question than a reply...My D is struggling to find the answers to the Church in HIstory questions. As her teacher, are they written anywhere for me? this is our first year with TOG. We're on week 3, and we are plowing through, and all in all, things are going pretty well. I have 1D,1UG and 1LG (and a 2 year-old to keep things interesting!).
My D says that she is not finding the answers to the AQ and TQ in her reading....is she not being careful, or are they there? Short of reading everyone's assignments, it is hard to know. Thanks for your ear. |

My dd is in 6th grade and we are transitioning to her doing her work independently. I have found the Church History to be the most difficult for her, so we do it together. I read the book out loud to her and then we answer the questions together. I think that The Church in History is a challenging read for this age. I like the challenge, but we have found it best to do it together for now.

Becky this is one book we have struggled with. It helped me to notice the cover says that it used with high school and college students.
I have tried to find a substitute but there are really not any ones that cover all the material in the book that are less tough. I would read a chapter or two and see what you think and then consider whether you should use a simpler book that will cover less material or try to plow on OR consider reading it aloud to her. Generally children can understand material read out loud at a higher level than they can understand and read it. |

This has absolutely been the most difficult book. We've been trying to read it outloud together, and do the questions orally. I am not fond of this book at all, myself, and cannot blame my daughter for not looking forward to it! We are slogging through it. Another option is for you to read it yourself (a quick read for a grown-up) and summarize it for her on her level. Another option is doing the Trial and Triumph readings from the UG level instead. Cover any gaps in your thread by talking to her about your teachers notes. This is the ONLY TOG book we have not enjoyed thus far, so I think that's pretty good!

We found that we liked Church History in Plain Language much better and did it as a read aloud with discussion even when the younger two girls were in UG. Maybe you could try it.
