Hi all,
I am new to TOG. I am definitely purchasing it for this year, but am not sure where to start as my oldest will be starting her 10th grade year (we have done Sonlight in the past), and I will have 9th grade, 7th grade, 5th grade and 3rd grade students as well. My original thought was to start at year 4, but if I follow the plan, she would end with Year 2. Any thoughts on my choice and/or any alternative or creative ways to arrange this? My thought is should I be starting with Y3 to keep the US history cohesive? Also if I have to miss out on one of the year plans for her, which would be best. Hope this is not too confusing -- I am trying to make the best plan for her and am coming a bit late to the game.
Thanks!
Lori

I think this is depends partly on what you think she's covered well in the past. For my own daughter, I'd do years 2-4. But I can see good arguments for other plans. Myself, I would say not to miss year 4.

I don't think it would be a mistake to start with 4, if she has a reasonably good background in 19th century history. On the other hand, y4 literature is pretty dark, and you might prefer that she have maximum maturity before she studies that. Again, it's your call.

An unsolicited bit of advice: Don't be surprised or discouraged if your 10th grader struggles with the rhetoric assignments. Be willing to substitute in dialectic assignments if you need to. The rhetoric assignments are often adult-level material, and most kids require careful preparation to reach this level by age 15. Since it's your first year with Tapestry, be careful not to set your expectations too high. Smiler

Beth,
Thanks for replying and I appreciated your unsolicited advice :-) I can definitely benefit from someone who has been there before me!

Hi Lori,
We started in TOG with Year 4 b/c the period of history covered is the most familiar to all of us and thus it was easier on me as I got the swing of homeschooling! Roll Eyes That was two years ago. My oldest son was in 10th, so he will get Years 4, 1, and now 2 before graduating. Hope that helps!
