Hi,
It's about the time of the year when many rhetoric students are confronted with their first big exam. The question becomes: "How do I fit it all in without skipping a week"? Here are a few ideas and thoughts that might help someone, especially you new folks...

*Omit the reading assignments for the last week of the unit and do a lecture on Monday. At the end of the lecture, be sure and include a review of the unit. Take the exam at the end of the week.

*If you are new to Tapestry, consider giving the first test or two as open-note. This encourages students to take good notes as well!

*Don't give the entire exam; choose only sections that you feel the students are ready for.

*Give out the study guide about three weeks before the end of the unit so that students can begin studying. This is excellent preparation for college!

Maybe others will share ideas that have worked for them!

Blessings,

Dana C. in TN

I will proclaim the name of the Lord.
Oh, praise the greatness of our God!"

Thank you Dana! I have been wondering how to fit the unit exams in. I'mstill not sure how we will work it around our online co-op. I hope to find time to review with the guys next week (week 9 for us) and then do the history test one day and the lit exam the next. Finding the time might be more challenging than the test!
Blessings,
April

One other suggestion.

The first week of the new unit usually seems a bit "light," so we take the test during co-op time that first week of the new unit. Then, we discuss two weeks at the next co-op. We still assign them the reading for the week they take the test, even though we won't discuss it until the following week. We also allow them to put off some of the reading that week (to do it the following week before we discuss it) if they need the time to study.

For example, if the unit ends with week 9, here is what we would do:
[LIST]Weeks 6-8 Review a little at a time during co-op
  • Week 9 Assign week 9 reading as usual [but allow them to put some of it off until next week, if they need lots of time to study], then take test during co-op time
  • Week 10 Finish week 9 & 10 reading and discuss both weeks at co-op

Hope that makes sense. Our co-op has used this method for several years, and it has worked well.

    Teri

I have staggered the quizzes to be one week away from the discussions. This means that if I discuss week 8, the quiz won't be until the following Friday. The first week of the new unit tends to be lighter or a bridge week so the Unit test can also be studied for. I typically tell my student to study past quizzes, and she has done well with this.

    So on
Thurs: Week 8, Fri: Quiz on Week 7
Thurs: Week 9, Fri: Quiz on Week 8
    Thurs:Week 10 & study for Exam, Fri:Unit Exam

    Hope this seems clear,
    Pam
