We didn't get to unit 4 of year 2 redesigned. Should we complete it before beginning unit 3 redesigned? How would I handle the writing assignments if we do unit 4? The writing assignments seem to get progressively harder.

I think I would go ahead and finish the last unit. If it wasn't the revolution, you might consider skipping it but I think that's important.

If you have younger children and want to eventually even up, I'd wait and do something subtractive with either the end of the 19th or more likely the 20th century.

But that's just my personal opinion on which sections of history are more important for which ages.

On the other hand, you may find you fall behind each year by a bit, if so you may just wish to accept that and even plan for it.

I have been struggling with that same dilemma. Here is my situation. I have two sons in high school - grades 9 and 11 this year, so I really don't have time to stretch things out as I would like. My 11th grader needs to get through the material in order to graduate on time at the end of 12th grade having completed all 4 year of TOG. So, I am having the 11th grader power through the teacher's notes to get the basic flow of history and gov't ideas ( he is reading all the notes - doing about a week's worth each day). My younger son is now reading the D level history assignments for unit 4. Together we are watching dvd lectures from the Teaching Company to reinforce information. We are racing to get this done because we are joining a co-op for year 3, and our group is having its first discussion on Aug 28th. We have to be ready! My goal is to have the guys done with whatever they are going to do for year 2 by the 18th of Aug so I can give them the week 1 assignments for year 3. I am hoping the structure of the co-op will help us realistically cover everything we need to do in a timely fashion. I hate having to skim over material I really wanted to take more time on, but right now speed is of the essence! obviously that means that writing is not happening, but it will again as we begin yr 3!

PS: If I had younger children, and I were not doing a co-op, I would certainly do unit 4 of yr 2 fully before moving on. hope this helps!

I understand the pressure you are feeling with 2 high schoolers. I've graduated 3 with the last one only spending a year in TOG. I wish we were near a TOG co-op.

I am currently homeschooling a 4th, a 8th, & a 9th grader. I will probably do unit 4 since I have all the books! Lol! I'm just not sure how to do the writing assignments. I really wanted to be more faithful in this area.

I do want to make sure my oldest doesn't skimp on this time period since we won't make it back to this unit before she graduates! My girls prefer Ancient Civilizations. If instead we spent 4 years studying it, they would be happy but lopsided. Ha!
