I am new to TOG and fairly new to homeschooling. We have five children that we are pulling out of public school (Chris & Anna, 11th gd; Emmett, 9th gd; and Richard & Hannah, both doing 5th gd work.)

My question is which year plan do we start with?
After reading an explanation of why only 1oo years were covered in year 3 and year 4, I thought that was where we should start. Then my husband and I looked at year 2 and think that is important too (my husband is a pastor Smiler)
Then there is the question of redesigned or not?

Anyone have any advice?

Have the 11th graders already done US History in PS? If so, I'd probably start with year 1 and then they would have year 1 and 2 finished before they graduate next year.

I would just make sure they did have a year of US history finished if they plan on college.

Just my 2 cents.

Blessings,
Jean

I like Jean's answer, and want to add to it that if they haven't done US history already, then I'd start with year 3 the way you originally planned. In particular, year 4 is great for introducing a young person to the political process. Both of my daughters who have been doing y4 (at the D level) are much more aware of politics now and suddenly have opinions of their own. They know more about the process and why it matters than I did when I left home.

I think that if I had to choose only one yearplan to study with my kids, it would probably be 4. (But I say that without having done 1 or 2 yet.)

I agree that the answer to your question lies in what requirements your two oldest have left to cover for graduation. If they have already covered US history, I might opt for Y1 or Y2 so you can use the Redesigned. If they still need US history, I'd start with Y3 and not worry about the Redesigned product at this point.
