Help! My ds has done TOG levels 1-4. Our church related school has just told me that I have to have British Literature to get a college preparatory diploma. Does any year of TOG correspond to British Literature? I'm thinking Year 2 is the closest. Can I legitimately give credit for British Literature?
Thanks, Lisa |

Hi! Years 2-4 all cover British Literature, and yes, Y2 is quite heavy with it. We include Beowulf, a little Chaucer, a lot of Shakespeare, selections from Spenser's Faerie Queene, all of Milton's Paradise Lost, Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, as well as excerpts from Pope and a number of other English poets.
I'd say that in Year 2 we hit the major highlights from the same period that most schools would consider English (or British) Literature I, so I think you are good to go. :-) Since it's a heavy year, however, you may want to trim it down to JUST the English literature selections, plus perhaps Dante's epic, the Commedia (Dante is AMAZING---as C.S. Lewis said, he was just about the greatest Christian poet ever, and his Commedia is widely regarded as THE literary masterpiece of the Middle Ages). P.S. If you are also wondering about American Literature, I'd say that that really begins in Year 3 (though we do a smattering in late Year 2) and continues through Year 4. |
