I just got Year 3 DE and have printed my booklists. I was very excited to see that I have quite a few of the Literature selections for UG and D. However, I asked my kids about some of them and THEY'VE ALREADY READ THEM!! Ugh! All my kids are avid readers (I have to tell them to put the books down and go play)...so what should I do? Should they read them again when we come to them and have some "easier weeks?" Should I get the alternate if there is one? My UG kids have read 5 of the 17, and my D has read 4 of the 16. Just looking for suggestions...thanks.

Just some quick thoughts. I would say it depends on the book and the literature worksheet and discussion in the Teacher's Notes.

For D, the discussion and skills learned are very worth them doing the worksheet and discussing with you, and that usually means they'll need to read the book again. For many books, this is good thing, but it's a judgment call. You could easily move these around so that the books they'll already read could be done on a busier week.

For UG, I would say that most often, you could teach the worksheet skill with an alternate book or just discuss the alternate book with them briefly, maybe have them give you a summary of each chapter, for example. Some books are just good to read again - Little Women, for example. Of course, you could have them read another by the same author, like the Little House series.

For your younger children, I'd be tempted to substitute something else. I guess I'd find out how long ago they read the book and if they enjoyed it. The longer ago they read it and the more enjoyable the book, the easier it is to ask them to reread it, but at these ages I'd favor wider experience of reading.

For R level children, I know you didn't ask, I'd explain that this is how college is, sometimes you have to reread something for a class. Generally unless you've read it very recently you'll still have to go back over it. The good news is you'll find it easier the second time and you'll get more out of it.

Another suggestion to consider... if your D kids are avid readers, you might consider bumping them up and doing a few R books (just a few), and spreading those out over whatever number of weeks you have to cover, or else mixing them with D books (many D students whiz through the D level worksheets). They might be ready for that. :-)

you could see if there is an audio book available for any of them, perhaps a movie edition as well.

Completed TOG2 (classic) and now in TOG3 with my UG/D level daughter.

I think this is a great idea!
