Should I buy these books for the 3 poets for D level? I have several collections of poetry by the particular poets already. I guess I'm wondering if the kids just need to read particular poems (which I could find in my books)or if there is other info in the "Poetry for Young People" books that they would be missing?
Thanks! |

Songbird,
I really like this series for poetry. It is especially helpful if your child finds poetry difficult to understand. The selected poem or excerpts from longer poems are beautifully illustrated in this series. There is some biographical information about the life of the poet as well as explanations about style and common techniques used by the poet. Our D group has really enjoyed discussing poets using these books. In addition, it has encouraged some of our students to look-up the complete poem after reading an excerpt in these books. If you have a lot of poetry books at home and feel that you can walk them through a discussion and make it accessible to them, you may be fine substituting these book. If I remember correctly, all you would know from the reading chart is which poet is being covered. You would not know which poems were covered without the book. HTH, Eia |
