Hello,
We are new to TOG and I am currently using it with my four children in 1,4,6,9 grades. I am looking forward to meeting other Orthodox Christians and share ideas, particularly on the bible study. In Christ |

Hi, We're also starting TOGY1 this year and are Orthodox. I'm planning to use Barbara Shukin's "History Portfolio" and "Journaling through the Liturgical Year" along with TOG. Are you familiar with these? I have 5 children, ages 4, 6, 8, 11 and 14. This will be our first year homeschooling, and I'm in the process of pulling all the resources together for Unit 1. Any Orthodox recommendations are welcome!

I'm pretty sure there is a Yahoo! group for Orthodox TOG users.

Hi Rebecca,
It is very nice to hear from you. I am so glad to hear that you have decided to homeschool. We are in our third year and it is the most wonderful thing we have done. I have researched through so many different curriculum and we are finally set on this one. I am also currently using TOGY1 and we really enjoy it so far. We are on week 10 this week. We homeschool over the summer. It helps us get through the Texas heat. I am familiar with Barbara Shukin's books. I have purchased the "Journaling Through the Liturgical Year" and we plan on starting it with the start of the church year. I have not yet had the chance to see the "History Portfolio" books in person yet. Do you know if they are written from an Orthodox perspective or are they secular. I know that Barbara is Orthodox, but I could not tell by the samples on the website if she emphasizes that in her curriculum. I do have some information on a unit study style curriculum that is written from an Orthodox Christian point of view. It is not completed yet, but the authors have offered what they have for purchase. I would be glad to pass that information on if you are interested. I am also on a yahoo group for Orthodox homeschoolers. It is helpful to know that we are not alone in our journey of the true faith. |

Hi again,
Thanks for the encouragement! We're really looking forward to starting TOG in a couple of weeks. I would be interested in the Orthodox unit study you mentioned. I only have Barbara's Ancient History Portfolio, which isn't explicitly Orthodox but does include Biblical history, much like Story of the World, which she recommends in her bibliography. I would assume that the medieval and renaissance porfolios would provide a more Orthodox historical emphasis when dealing with church history than secular or protestant resources, but I haven't really looked into them yet. I'm also on the yahoo group for Orthodox homeschoolers, but I haven't really posted much. I have more to learn than to contribute at this point! My e-mail is rnugent55@comcast.net if you'd like to contact me. Hope you're surviving the heat. It's 95 and very humid here today, so we're not getting out much! |
