The Week 12 UG reading assignment for "War, Peace and All That Jazz" is chapters 22, 25 and 45. The edition of the book we're using has 44 chapters. Is this an edition issue or an error in the assignment page?
Thanks,
Robin

I just noticed this myself and wonder what chapter should be read instead? In skimming over this book I've noticed some fairly overt sections that show the author's bias against traditional Christianity... time is short and won't be able to proof read before my dd reads her assignment.
Thanks,
Laurie

I believe that the edition used by TOG has one more chapter than some of the editions that we own. I found, as we were listening to the book on tape, that there was one additional chapter about science and space just before or after our chapter 12.

That means, after chapter 12, I've had to subtract one from any assigned TOG chapter - so for examplte, chapter 45 is the equivalent of our edition 44. Assigned chapter 22 is the equivalent of our chapter 21.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Thanks. I just had my daughter read chapters 22 and 25 and didn't worry too much about 45. Speaking of bias, sometimes my dd reads to me sections of her history books, especially when riding in the car, and I've been a little surprised at Hakim's treatment of some topics. I'm thinking specifically of her take on the Scopes trial and remarks related to how pretty much everyone accepted evolution and taught it in school. There have been other things, too, which keeps me on my toes with making sure I discuss things with her instead of just letting her read the assignments blindly.

I've been really keeping tabs on my dd's assignments in A History of US this year. I too thought the Scopes Trial issues were biased. Also, when we were reading about the events concerning labor unions and relations btw. the business magnates and the workers, I felt there was a socialist bent. Left me feeling a little troubled and not quite sure who was in the wrong (the business owners weren't lily white, innocents).

I know there isn't always a nice, tidy answer to the problems and dilemmas we read about in history, but the Scopes Trial surely was bent towards an evolutionary mindset, and I felt Hakim handled it as though there was no valid point to be made by the Creationists (fundamentalists). Also, I thought that the TOG notes regarding the origin of the term "fundamentalism" were excellent! I never knew that it had its roots in church leaders being concerned over the direction of the church (becoming more liberal), rather than society at large! I am amazed at how much I'm learning through this curriculum.

Hi Ladies ~ I have experienced the same w/the chapters. My book only has 43 Chapters. I found this book in our local library. Chapter 43 Titled: Peace. Ugh.....I wonder how much of this I am out of order. I do see a benefit to some of the bias in the book. A great time to learn discernment and not to take any book as gospel truth other than the Bible. However, with moms of multiple children, there is no way we can read every book on the list for our children. It would be nice to have a flag during those chapters to allow us the opportunity to point that out to our children to make sure we get the benefit of discussions.
Blessings~ Lisa

I checked on this since I have second edition books as well. You can find the third edition books at Google's "books" search and then you can look at the table of contents, but the skinny is two books have additional chapters 5 and 9.

In book 5 the extra chapter is chapter 30.

In book 9 the extra chapter is chapter 12.

Adapt from there.
