This isn't really a question specific to Y2, but there isn't another clear writing portion on the forum, so I'll post here. We're doing the newspaper project in Unit 4 of Year 2 at the LG level (level 2). My question involves topic sentences and the first summary paragraph of a newspaper article. I'm leaning towards teaching that the first paragraph doesn't really have a topic sentence per se because it is supposed to summarize the important facts of the article. Paragraphs after that will have the typical topic sentence/body/conclusion format.
Is this right? I have WRiting Aids, and if this question is answered there and I've missed it, sorry for the time. Just let me know it's there and I'll search again. Thanks, Deanna |

I did this last year in Year 1 with 3 of my kids LG/UG. Anyway, that's exactly how I presented it after we got a newspaper and looked at several articles together. The first paragraph is sometimes one long sentence summarizing the whole article. Then the other paragraphs have a topic sentence.
This is just from my observations and understanding. My kids wrote some great articles on Esther, Daniel, etc. over a 6 week period. We drew pictures, advertisements, and cartoons and copied it all together as a newspaper that we gave to the grandparents at the Unit Celebration. Everyone involved loved it! AD |
