I can't find Going to War in World War I.
As this is a lower grammar book, used over four weeks I would think it's a good intro book at an age appropriate level.
Does anyone have another recommendation?
I asked on the yahoo group and got no response.

The book is available through Amazon here, but it's pricey (imo) for that age group. But then, I have a tight budget, so choices have to be made.

Since my LG student is in 1st grade, I'm going to put a greater emphasis on skills rather than History. That being said, I am looking for easy readers that 'tie in' with the WW1 theme.

I found this Snoopy Battles the Red Baronin which our favorite beagle fights the WW1 flying ace. Which will bring up terms like "sopwith camel' and 'flying ace' and 'dogfight'. From there, I know enough history to get a discussion going with a 1st grader Wink and just follow a few rabbit trails.

In addition, I found a great set of books for near-nothing at a curriculum fair: the Pictorial Encyclopedias of American History, published in 1970. They cover every bit of US history in a manner that could be used by LG or UG. You might look on ebay.

Finally, here's site http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwone/ with some really good stuff! Interactive maps and recreations of the trenches. It's done by the BBC (UK) but since ww1 affected them so much, their viewpoint is worth exploring.

I hope some of this helps.

FYI for those trying to find this book,
it was waay above my k-3rd graders' heads.
I could have done without it for them. I haven't found anything else that would cover WWI stuff for this age level - though I will look into the above resources like SNoopy and whatnot.
I also think War Games is too sad for us. I'll stop 2/3 way through to give them an idea of what life was like for a soldier, but stop when it starts the war part.

Everyone is different - my K son really liked the Going to War books. (He did say they were too long - he couldn't read the whole book in one day!) I agree about the War Games book, which I didn't even start reading to him, especially since the main character's name is also my son's name.

You are right, I should have mentioned I have a very girly girl and she was completely glazed over after page two (1st grader) and my now 4th grader was only slightly interested in the trench stuff.
I can definitely see my boy at that age loving it.
Thanks for the reminder.

When I did Year 4 with my third-grader, we used "Going to War in WWI" and loved it. I had to spend time getting her up to speed on warfare tactics. We made trenches with bedcovers and had Playmobil people go "over the top." The Playmobils acted out guerilla warfare. We talked about what it meant to be under seige, what incindiery bombs are, and so on. We watched "World War I in Color" and I'd stop the DVD player often to explain things to her. All that effort really paid off when we got to WWII and Vietnam!
