Hi

I am considering purchasing Y1, but would like to begin with Unit 3, because we have recently covered everything up to that point. I have a 7th grader, 5th grader, and 3rd grader. I am wondering if starting at Unit 3 might cause problems with writing. I would like to try Writing Aids. Writing does not come easily for my oldest. Will the writing assignments in the year plan be more complex in Unit 3 than in Unit 1 so that it would be more difficult to jump in with U3?

TIA!

Hi,
One possibility to consider is to wait on starting writing assignments until you and your students have some experience under your belts. You could wait to begin writing until Year 2 Unit 1.

I'm assuming by your post that you have not purchased Units 1 and 2. If you did purchase it though, then another option would be to use the writing assignments in unit 1 and possibly unit 2. All you would need to do is change the topics.

While you certainly could jump right into unit 3 writing, your students will miss some basic writing instructions (found in unit 1) that are foundational to the writing process. Yes, you could use Writing Aids to teach those basics, but you'd have to jump around and figure it out yourself.

So, again, I'd suggest either waiting, or using unit 1 if you have it. Smiler

Hi Dana

Thank you for your helpful reply! In light of what you have said, I will probably use Writing with Ease by Susan Wise Bauer for my younger two and something else for my 7th grader until I get to Y2 U1.

Thanks again!
