I have a 3rd grader, for her I'm going for exposure. No doubt about it. We're looking at picture books, reading fun fiction, etc.

But what about my 6th grader? Am I going for retention or is that to wait until rhetoric level?

We're doing TOG year 2 which is flying by at a frightening pace for my middle schooler. There's much to learn and I'm not sure she's holding on to any of the facts. Brainstorm with me, is exposure still ok at this point? If I had her doing the eval's she would NOT have done well filling in the chart on Islam for week 3. She did the work, but to reach back and pull out the facts, don't think she could have.

My high schooler hasn't much memory of who Pippin, Charles the Hammer, Peter the Hermit, or Frederick Barbarossa is either but he's a great kid, and is going to do just fine in college. He's got a much better attitude towards school this year as a result of my cutting back on some of the work. It's more attainable for him at this point of the game with other classes demanding his attention.

I've been feeling though, like I've missed my chance for retention with him and therefore am thinking I need to be sure my 6th grader is working a bit harder? She doesn't need the pressure, though and is already working hard.

Confused on this point today...

Actually, it sounds like they are doing great!I'd go for exposure. Let them get the big picture and enjoy! With the big picture, they can make connections with the details. Also in the future, they'll know roughly where to find the details if they are looking up info! By giving them the exposure, they may turn into historians yet, deciding to read historical books at their leisure and visit historical places and appreciate them more and critique/evaluate them better in light of the big picture/exposure they received growing up! Also, with the big picture/exposure, they can make more informed choices as voters.

Of the names you've mentioned the only one I think anyone needs to have somewhere in their memory is maybe Charles the Hammer and then only a vague connection with Charlemagne who they should know too.
