Is it possible to copy and paste portions of the Frameworks and Poetics documents from their large on-line pdf documents into a small usable document? I am leading a literature co-op and I'd love to have some of the info and examples provided in these on-line documents sitting in front of me during our discussions. However, I don't have the ability to cut and paste from Poetics or Frameworks. Are these files "locked"? Do I need to purchase some type of pdf editing software - or wouldn't that help if the files are locked? I cannot even select a portion of these documents. If I choose to "select all" it still doesn't give me a copy option. Yes, I could do "ctrl+C" but I don't want to copy 191 pages!!! I just want a few paragraphs here and there.

Any insight would be appreciated. I'm assuming there are other people who also wish they could pull out select portions for discussions.

Thank you.

Ellen

Hi Ellen! I'm afraid that, as far as I know, it's not possible to copy sections of Poetics and Frameworks. I'm pretty sure that's standard with all Loom documents for copyright reasons, etc. :-/ Sorry! I do understand the problem; I'm also leading a literature co-op class discussion each week and feel the need to have those documents on hand. My solution was to half-way bite the bullet and print off just the pages from sections that I need (which for me means mostly Part IV of Poetics). This is still a hefty chunk, but it's definitely not 191 pages! More like 40 or 50.

Similarly, with Frameworks, you could just print off the sections you are going to be using (if you are in Y3, that would be just a few selections from the Neoclassical section, followed later by the nineteenth century selections).

I hope that print costs for paper and ink aren't a huge stopper for you. If that is a significant concern, I'd encourage you to remember that you will be using these docs all year, so printing off some chunks as needed (I would NOT advise printing the whole of either document!) and putting them into a binder is probably worth it in the long run. In class I have my class plan in one binder and my Loom documents as a "handbook" in another binder, for reference.

Frankly, I'm grateful to have these detailed custom resources at just the cost of printing them off! I know firsthand how many, many hours of skilled labor in research and writing have gone into them, and I'm glad as a teacher that the company has seen fit to provide them for free, at least while they are still in development.

Maybe this thought will help: these documents are meant to be more like handbook/textbook resources than anything else and IF the company ever does publish and sell them in hardcopy, that is probably how they will be laid out. So if you go on teaching, in the long run it might be less frustrating if you try to think of them as "books" in which you do have to flip pages to find the sections you want, rather than as digital docs that seem like you ought to be able to cut and paste in them for class discussions.

Anyway, that's how I've been training myself to think. Even though I do have access to the documents and COULD cut/paste, I'm printing and forcing myself to treat them like hardcopy handbooks/textbooks because I know that's how I may have to use them in the future. And I will say that as I use my printed version of Poetics I do find myself beginning to memorize where certain sections are, which helps me to flip over to them more easily.

Anyway, those are just a few thoughts. I hope some of them are useful to you! :-)

Ellen, if you're still there, I want to correct something I said earlier. Apparently it IS possible to copy/paste from Poetics and Frameworks, if you change the hand in the toolbar to the select button.

I just found out this morning about my error, and I wanted to let you know right away and tell you that I'm sorry for making that mistake. I thought I was pretty sure of my information, but obviously my knowledge wasn't good enough. I know that there are copyright sanctions in place on our documents, but I guess the inability to copy/paste isn't one of them.

Personally I plan to keep on with the printed versions for the reasons that I mentioned earlier, but I hope that this more accurate information will give you more options at least and possibly make your life easier. :-)

Thank you, Christy. I did not know that was an option. I believe that will be helpful. Smiler

I did want to let you know that we have been enjoying the literature studies in the redesigned curriculum. Thank you for all the work you put into that.

Blessings,

Ellen
