Hello,

I have a question about the map assignment for week 1. From the list of items to be labled, it doesn't say which maps to label..... What I am trying to say is, there is an enormous list of locations to label. Such as Bodies of water, rivers, islands, major cities, mountains, and deserts. What map do you label with all of this? The directions just say to print out certain maps then to label the maps. So, ugh..... do you have to jump from map to map as you locate this information, or what? I was wanting to do the transparencies however I am completly lost on how to do these as well. I read the directions on the loom and saw the 3 samples on page 25. I am a visual learner, if I saw what I needed to do I would understand instantly. Sorry I sound so whinny, but I am frustrated and my kiddos are looking at me like, You don't know what you are doing!!!!!

Thank you for letting me vent and hopefully my question is somewhat clear.....

Hi,

The first week of geography is a big review of what they know. If your child doesn't know the continents and oceans, it's a great time to start. If they know a lot, it's a great review week. Everyone is at a different place, so it's just a good time to evaluate and see what your group knows. At least that's how we use week 1.

We usually start our transparency maps on week 2. There is a lot of information and discussion about transparency maps on this forum and the Tog Loose Threads group. Just do a search for transparency and you should get lots of help for getting started.

I had a hard time getting started last year with our transparency project too. Rather than list a detailed description about what I do, I will list the maps I used for the first few weeks to help you see how this can work.

This is for Year 2 Redesigned Transparency Maps

Week 1-Oral review of Continents, Oceans, Countries, Rivers, Mts. etc. We focused on geography from Year 1 and Europe.

Week 2-I printed out a color map of the Byzantine Empire (I used the color one under Dialectic/Rhetoric column) on cardstock. We like to label the Oceans and Countries on the cardstock, basemap. Next, we punch holes in 2 transparencies to lay over this map. Following the instructions in the Student Page under Geography, we made one transparency to show the Roman Empire and the other the Byzantine Empire.

Week 3- We printed out the Islamic Empire map on cardstock as our basemap. We labeled the Oceans and Countries on the base map. Then we made three transparencies to use as overlays. The first one showed the Islamic Empire in 632, the second in 750 and the third showed which areas are Muslim today. If you use different colors for each layer, it makes a great tool for seeing how things change over time.

There are so many ways to do these transparencies. Once you get started, it will make more sense to you. I like to use the colored maps for our base maps, but the black and white work fine too. It is nice to color the black and white if you go this route.

Fourmomkids, you don't say what level you're doing. If you look at the LG level, you'll see that numbers 1-3 for geography are general studies: first, general terms, then specific things located all over the world. For 2-3, then, you'd need a whole world map.

When you get to number 4, though, it says "study the major features of Europe with your teacher." That's your cue to look at a map of Europe rather than the world map. (These things could also be identified on the world map, but on the Europe map are some dots which will help you locate cities and smaller things like that.)

If you print out the answer maps (in the right-hand column of Map Aids), those might answer some of your questions. You could compare what's on each map to what is listed in the geography description, and go from there. That would be visual, too!

For D and R labels, you can probably use the world map for most of these things. If it turns out that some things aren't shown on the world map, then check the Europe map.

I find that it's a good idea for me to print these things out ahead of time and read through the kids' directions. With the maps, the teacher's maps, and the kids' instructions in front of me, I can usually figure out what map to use for what.

OH - I just remembered why there's a Europe map at all in D/R this week. You can do all the D/R labeling on the world map, I think; the Europe map is there in case you're doing the salt map of Europe (which we did). Smiler

Incidentally, I would add that if you're feeling frustrated with this, then don't start the transparency project right now. You could add it in later in the year, or in a future year. Right now, if you're just getting started with Tapestry, you just need to be figuring out how these things will happen week to week, rather than worrying about starting something that is a bit more complicated, time-consuming, and expensive. We're doing the transparencies for the first time this year, and this is our third year with Tapestry.

So for D/R level, we are to make 6 base maps, but only one overlay map, labeling the features on p. 25? (or are these separate overlays? one for deserts, one for mountains, etc.?)

After reading the assignment, I thought it meant to do transparencies for each of the base maps, labeling what is listed on p. 25 that would fit onto that map (for example, on the Northeastern America map, labeling just those few things, etc.) *and* everything again on the map of the world.

I'm still pretty fuzzy on this. If the student is *not* supposed to make overlays for all 6 of the base maps, is that because those will be assigned in future weeks? It says "all labels are of the permanent type", so that led me to believe you were supposed to be making the basic overlays for each map.

On p. 58 of the Teacher's Notes (week 1), the student will also be making a map of the barbarian tribes' routes. Would this be an overlay to the Mediterranean base map?

Thanks.

Hi there,
In week 1, students can make the base map(s) of the countries that they are going to include in their transparency project. This includes writing/coloring the permanent labels which are land formations. Yes, in future weeks, anytime the country that you chose is part of the assignment, you can add an overlay. (If you bought MapAids, it tells you when to put on an overlay.)

Dana,
I found this information very helpful. I just opened my map aids disc for yr 2 after reading this post just to check out the overlay information. This is great! We abandoned the overlay project last year with year 1 because it was our first year with TOG and my map aids disc did not have this information on it. Is there a revised version of the yr 1 map aids disc that I could acquire for the next time we cycle through year 1?

This is my first year with TOG. I am reviewing my UG maps for Year 2, week 1 and I saw where there is a Italian map but not a correlating teacher's Italian map. Is that just for the sake of the review?

Hi,
The answers to student maps may be combined on one or more teacher maps. So, in this case, the answers to the Italian Peninsula map are on the Teacher Europe map.

Hi. I'm not sure I am posting correctly. Question: Somewhere I found a file where someone had put all the geography labels on an Avery document to be printed on clear labels to put on the map. BRILLIANT. Does anyone know where I found it??? I got the labels!

Hi Randi,

I think what you are looking for is under Year 1 Geography/MapAid under the Topic "Reluctant Writer and Maps". The Topic Starter was rbon. I don't know how to put a direct link in here for you.

Hope that helps.

Hi, this is my first week with Yr 2 and I'm already finding this geography assignment far too time-consuming! I don't mean to complain but I am surprised that there isn't something already in the teacher's notes defining the terms and perhaps showing pictures. The Teacher's notes are so thorough, this is one thing I would like to see in the next redesigned edition. I'm having a hard time finding all the terms in the atlases that I have. Maybe it's time for a new one? Otherwise incredible teacher's notes!
