I have noticed that the discussion questions for D level students (the Thinking and Accountability Questions) don't seem to be the same for the students as for the teacher's answers in the Teacher Notes. Is there an update on the Loom? It is a little frustrating when the questions don't seem to be the same.

This is for Year 2 Unit 1, up to the first 6 weeks, anyway.

Thanks for any help you can be,
Hilary

I don't know about what you have in particular, but in general, the questions and answers aren't quite the same. I'll give my impressions of what's going on here. The student questions aren't intended to be just the same as the questions the teacher will have. Student questions are intended to guide the student in reading and thinking, as he prepares for discussion. Teacher questions are to help us guide the discussion. Sometimes the questions will be in a different order, or worded differently. Some student questions might not be addressed much at all. But, having done his preparation, the student should be well able to participate in the discussion.

Hillary,

Your observation about the Teacher Notes is not an error, just a different way of doing things. Nearly everything your child is asked about in the Accountability and Thinking questions is presented to you in the teacher notes each week. Many of the answers are in the first few pages, before you get to the discussion script. For me, it is necessary to read those each week in order to have a meaningful discussion with my group. Once the students have answered their questions and you have read your notes, you're ready to follow the discussion script in the teachers notes. This script will guide your through a chat of the topics covered in that week of history. I always tell my students that the questions are to prepare them for the discussion time, but they are not The Discussion. During the discussion you will touch on some of these exact topics, but it's done as a conversation rather than to "check their answers" to each question.

If you check out the documents on your Loom disc, there should be a file on Socratic Discussions and one on the Thinking and Accountability Questions. This will answer many of your questions about the format for the Teacher Notes and how to have a great discussion with your children. It takes a little time to get used to doing things a new way, but if you hang in there and give it a try, I think you'll discover that it works very well. I love the Teacher Notes as written and wouldn't change a thing. We are all learning so much together and have been richly blessed by the guidance and thoughtful questions posed throughout the notes for discussion.

I hope I have understood your question correctly. If you look at these documents on the Loom and discover that you are still feeling like things don't match up, please post again and maybe someone else can help you out. We did Y2 last year and I don't remember any problems with the questions and teacher notes, so I think you might be expecting it to work differently than it does.

Hope this helps!

Blessings,
Eia

Thanks for your help in seeing the difference between the questions being the discussion and the questions helping to prepare for the discussion. I'll have to go back and reread the article on the Loom.

Thanks,
Hilary
