I just found the vocab glossary and am so excited! I need creative ways to teach my (mostly upper) grammar student. He could just read the list and memorize, but I was hoping for some creative suggestions...

I'm using the vocab as spelling words for my UG & LG students. I have all the vocab pages in page protectors.
On Monday I read through both UG & LG w/ both of them. They each have a permanent marker. When I'm done they each pick about 8 words to study for the week and underline them in their color. Both are good spellers and try to pick the hardest words.
On Tuesday they copy their chosen words into their notebooks.
On Wednesday I go over the words w/ them looking for phonograms and spelling patterns. They usually rewrite the words in syllables.
On Thursday I give them a spelling quiz with the words.

I did read about a mom who picked some of the words and made a list on a 3x5 card for a bookmark...her girls would listen (they were young) specifically for the words while she read aloud. She said they all really enjoyed doing the vocab that way. I searched and searched these forums for that post but can't find it.

We go through the list on Monday and fine around 5 words we don't know. I put each one on an index card and when it is time for readings they come out and I remind them of the words we are looking for. After that we just listen for them to come up in the reading.

Once found we figure out what the definition is and write it on the back of the card.

I use www.edhelper.com to make word lists, puzzles, fill in the blanks and even trace the word. It has definitions but I prefer the ones given on the evaluations cd.

This website is great because it also has lessons (with a quiz) on all subjects. I just downloaded a small lesson on tetonic plates which is assigned in wk 4. It worked great! There's also lessons on holidays and coloring pages. It has made it more fun for my UG 8year old son.

And I admit that I've never assigned these words to any of my kids. In our case, the exposure to all this reading (plus discussion, plus life) is plenty to build a large vocabulary.

I just started with a book called Vocabulary Cartoons. It has the word, a funny picture, with some sentances using the word and of course the meaning. It looks like it will be a lot of fun. We just started and will do 2 words a week. (my oldest is 7) The first word is Abduct and all three of my kids 3,5,7 could tell me what it meant the first day.

I made matching cards;
Vocab word on 1 card and a card w/ a picture on it that represents the vocab,
Then I place them all upside down, and I have my LG kid play the matching game.
