I am starting out in Y2 U4 this year and working through to Y3 U3. I have a 9th grade student that has never read the literature books from the previous units. He will not be able to compare any of the books since he has not read them.
So my question to you is....Do I just let him begin to read the books required for reading in literature, for the first nine weeks and discuss them with him. Rather than make him start off writing a literary analysis right away. Then when we get into Y3 have him write the papers. I am just not sure how fast to get moving in this area. I do not want to freak him out. Right now he is gung ho and wants to get honors credit. Does he also need to do the writing assignments along with the literary analysis papers. Does that seem like a lot of work to you? I really wish that I would have just started at the begining, but we have just studied the middle ages recently. We are ready to get into US history and I didn't want to leave out the Revolution. I would appreciate any help I could get! Brenda |

Hi Brenda,
I'd suggest that you have him read the dialectic selections in Year 2 Unit 4, and then begin rhetoric with him in Year 3 Unit 1. Now, obviously he can't get honors credit in that one unit, but he could finish up next summer if he'd like. You can substitute the literature papers for the writing assignments. The main thing you'll want to be aware of is that if you are giving a Literature credit (whether regular or honors), it is quite likely that you will have to give an *additional* English credit. Most states require English I, II, etc, and consider Literature an elective. However, check with your state or umbrella school first to be sure of what rules you have to follow. Blessings, Dana C. in TN "Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God!" Deut. 32:2-4 |
