The descriptions of the English credit and the Literature credit seem to say the same thing. What is the difference and what is included if you only want an English credit?

Dana or Marcia, could you verify or correct my response --
(I have wondered about this too.) What it seems to say to me is that in the English Credit alone option, the Lit. Analysis Paper +/or Lit. Comparison Paper takes the place of one or more writing assignments, whereas in the English credit plus the Literature credit, the Literature paper(s) would be in addition to the writing assigns. Based on this quote from the Year 2 Intro. Doc, pg 25, "English Studies Different schools do it differently. There are three basic components to studying English: grammar, composition, and literature study. Like most of the better prep schools, this curriculum offers a full credit in English (which is considered grammar and composition) and at least a separate ½ credit per year in Literature Studies. Year 2 offers ½ to 1 high school credit in Literature for successful completion of its reading plan." it seems clear that if you do the Lit. readings, you qualify for credit in both English and Literature -- I guess what's not as clear is if you skipped Literature entirely,(not that I would advocate it), would you still qualify for an English credit for just grammar and composition? Could you clarify for us? I thank God for your patient answers to our endless questions Blessings, Donna |

Hi ladies,
It does seem that this isn't worded well, so we need to correct the Year 2 Introduction. Yes, you are correct in that there are more literary analysis papers assigned for the literature credit. These do not take the place of any papers in the Writing Assignments. However, for the English credit, the literature papers do take the place of Writing Assignments. No, you probably don't want to give both an English credit and a Literature credit. However, the first thing to do is to check with your umbrella school or state requirements about this. Here in TN, we have to have 4 full credits of English. Literature doesn't count as English, but only as an elective. So, if I so chose to have my student do *all* of the writing assignments and *all* of the literature assignments, I could give one full English credit. However, there would be some lit assignments "left-over" from the credit, which could be labeled as an extra "1/2" credit in Lit (probably for an elective). Does that make sense now? If not, please feel free to tell me. Blessings, Dana C. in TN "Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God!" Deut. 32:2-4 |
