Hello,

I've spent quite some time trying to figure out which pages of "The Story of Europe" on www.mainlesson.com's website will match up with the TOG reading assignments for Y2U2.

For example, Week 11 says to read p. 264-267 and p. 280-281, while Week 12 says to read p. 233-246 and pages 268-274 (stop at "Julius II").

Someone suggested here that I merely go by the chapter titles for that book at www.mainlesson.com and match them up with the teaching objectives for that week. For Dialectic (week 11) and the reading of "The Story of Europe", it says that the objectives are (summary): study of fine arts, early southern Renaissance, early artists - Giotto, Brunelleschi, and Donatello; I don't see any chapters within "The Story of Europe" that match up.

Week 12 focuses on the history of exploration through Columbus' great voyages, city of Florence, Botticelli, da Vinci, the Crusads, Spanish Inquisition, etc.

I guess numerous chapters of the book could be chosen to read along with this week, but the Reading Assignments chart says to read two selections from "The Story of Europe" and stop at Julius II. Well, there isn't a chapter titled with that name, so I just am not understanding where I should be reading.

It's not that I want my children to sit and sit in front of the computer to read some of these books, but budgets are too tight to purchase books that the library doesn't have.

www.mainlesson.com seems to fit the bill for many financially struggling families right now, but I'm really having difficulty figuring out what pages my daughter would read for the weeks' selections mentioned in TOG.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Julieanne

Julieanne,

I don't know if this will be of any help to you or not, but if you "look inside" the paperback copy, you can see the table of contents. Maybe you could use the chapter titles & page numbers to get you in the ballpark in the online book.

Look inside The Story of Europe

Susan,

Thank you so much for your suggestion. This was probably something you had easily thought of, but even though it said "Look Inside", I didn't notice that on the mainlesson.com website. I was just paying attention to the chapters listed on the online version of the book.

The page numbers there on the hard copy appear to be slightly off from what TOG has written in the reading assignments, but I can't exactly tell. I wonder if they are different print runs or editions? This is the main problem with suggesting in curriculum that people read pages such and such. Instead, I would think it much more prudent to suggest chapter and paragraph numbers. At least this gives me a much closer guess as to what should be read.

I really appreciate you making this suggestion! I do think, however, especially in these hard financial times, that someone at TOG who has copies of the H.E. Marshall books required for Core reading could help so many families out by comparing the page numbers on www.mainlesson.com to the actual page numbers in the hard copy, and include this information in the Loom or somewhere in the digital edition.

If I had a hard copy of the books, I would do this myself and ask TOG if they might be able to include this information on the Loom or somewhere.

If I end up purchasing one or more hard copies, I will let folks know the correct page numbers/chapters, because I think that will be very useful to lots of TOG users who are struggling to find/buy many of the core books.

Thank you,

Julieanne
