Hi, ladies!
Just wondering how everyone is handling the Poetics and Frameworks readings for their students. I have the Redesign DE version on my computer, but I assume these documents are on everyone else's Loom disks and are in the same boat--

Are you having your children (and you!) read them off the screen or are you printing the whole document (maybe putting it in a 3-ring binder?)? They are LOOONG documents (lots of paper and ink!), but the computer is not always convenient for us to read off of. Am I crazy to even THINK about printing them off week by week?

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Dear Lori,

Last year I printed Poetics and Frameworks week-by-week, 3-hole punched them, and put them in a 3-ring binder. This process did use a lot of paper, but we had the documents "in hand" whenever we needed to refer to something in our discussion times.

This year my dss are reading the documents on the computer. We'll see how it goes, but based on our first two weeks of discussion, I don't think they retain what they read on screen as well as what they read "in print." I may start requiring them to outline their on screen reading to be sure it is "sticking."

So, no real suggestions - just a couple of observations from someone who has printed and not printed.

Blessings,

Susan--
I appreciate your suggestions/comments!

Do you know whether Poetics is used over the rest of the TOG curriculum? I assume Frameworks is geared toward ONLY Year 2 (ie., Medieval/Renaissance/NeoClassical), but was hoping maybe if I printed Poetics, this would be used in other TOG year plans?

Dear Lori,

There was a thread about this topic not too long ago, but I was unable to locate it, so I'll tell you what I know and hope I am accurate.

Poetics and Frameworks are used in Years 3 and 4. Year 2 information is included in the Year 3 Poetics and Frameworks, and Years 2 and 3 information is included in the Year 4 Poetics and Frameworks. So they build on each other. Some of the definitions & other minor bits of information may be tweaked from year to year, but the overall content remains the same.

HTH!

Susan,

This is correct. Furthermore, if you don't want your child to read it onscreen, it's best to just print it once for the year for your year-plan this year. It's formatted like a handbook (the original idea being that when it's completed at the end of this Year 4 Redesign project, it will have one format that serves all four year-plans -- yes, we plan to revise Year 1 R Lit. a bit to access it but no idea when -- and that you'll print -- or have it printed -- once for all). Current copies of Years 2-3 Looms (whether DE or not) are inclusive of all materials that you'll need for your one year-plan, but some sections are referenced more than once during the year. Therefore, it's easiest for everyone if you want to access print primarily to just go ahead and print it once for the year and all rhetoric students -- present and future -- can use it.

Also, remember, this printing of the Loom is good for your version of TOG Y2 or Y3 for as long as your copy remains static. Meaning: if you're not a DE user, the printing of the Loom that you do this year will work with your copy of Year 2 indefinitely, for as long as your high schoolers need it, so it's not a waste at all. Just put it into page protectors and it's good for all students coming along.

Let us know if this raises any more questions for you!

Marcia

We decided to get Sony Readersfor the 2 Rh students and downloaded many free books used in Y3...in addition I have loaded all the Loom documents they will need for this year...that way I don't have to use up paper and ink and they don't have to lug around a folder along with all the other school books

Dear Sarah,

Poetics is on the Loom under Literature Helps. The Rhetoric Literature Reading Assignment chart is also on the Loom under Literature Helps. It gives instructions on what to read each week.
