I have several books that I own already, but are a obviously a different version than was used when choosing reading assignments, as the page number don't match at all.

Is there any place that tells the subject matter for the assigned pages, or would there be a way to get that information somehow?

I've had it happen so many times now that I really don't trust the page number assignments at all.

What really stinks is AFTER one of the dc has read the pages they'll ask my "why was I supposed to read about XYZ this week?" And it's usually something WAY off base (and once it was something very unpleasant!).

Hi Hillary!

I have had similar problems as well. I am part of a co-op Tapestry group, and I end up calling another mom to make sure I am doing the correct chapters with my kids. Unfortunately it took me a couple of weeks to realize we were doing the wrong readings! (shame on me! Roll Eyes )

I noticed that this year doing Y2 Dialectic, the Our Island Story and Story of Europe readings are all by page number. This is especially difficult if you are reading these books on line as an option. Wink

It might be a worthy suggestion to put chapter numbers in the student activity pages, instead of page numbers (or maybe both).

Yes, I, too am trying to use some of the online free versions of books instead of purchasing them.

I'd really like to see chapters referred to for student reading instead of specific page numbers that can vary from edition to edition.

Is there anyone at TOG who can help tell us which chapters are being read in some of these books, instead of the page numbers?

I'm thinking specifically of "The Story of Europe" by H.E. Marshall, and "This Country of Ours" by H.E. Marshall, and other books by Guerber that are free online.

Help!

I would like to bring this topic back to the top again. I am also having issues with figuring out what the correct assignments are for This Country of Ours. It seems like we are rereading some pages and missing others. In week 21 we were to read Ch.81 through Ch.82. Then in week 22, pp.518 through pp.535. These pages did not seem to match up with our topic for this week and overlapped what was read the previous week. I am confused as to why one week is chapters and the next week is pages.
Thanks,
Daphne

Oops, I was thinking this was on the Y3 boards. The week plans I gave above are for the Y3 reading. Sorry.

Hi all, I'm scratching my head here because all the books mentioned here are listed by chapter in my TOG readings. They are in Roman numerals. I have first printing.

Hi Pat! I have the second printing, am in Year 2, and it changes from week to week and source to source whether assignments are given by chapter or by page number. Chapters would be ideal.

Blessings!

I just realized that I have a different version than what is on the bookshelf. Mine has more pages in it. That is why they are not matching up when they give page numbers instead of chapter numbers. It would be helpful if they were all stated in chapter numbers instead of pages. This may be a year 3 redesign issue though. I will move over to the year 3 board and leave you all alone now. Thanks for listening to me think through my fingers. LOL!!

I believe that Tapestry uses many of the books mentioned in this thread are from Yesterday's Classics. It appears that they also show their books online. You could print out their table of contents to help you adjust page numbers.

Hello Ladies,

I have found this to be a problem for all year-plans.

Our family is Rhetoric but often use Dialectic & Grammar books as well.

Any book that is of a different edition from that specifically utilized during curriculum development leads to issues.

I would consider it a great blessing to not have simply page numbers or chapters but Topics or Titles.

Partial list of Books I am continually having problems with:
Music Appreciation
Nortons Anthologies
Marshall books

Thank you for bringing this up; it's quite pertinent and I expect it to become more of an issue as the years go by & the curriculum is updated with newer book editions.

This has been a continuous complaint since I've been using TOG and reading these forums.

I hope that someone at TOG is listening and taking careful note of the many times that people have complained about this.

This is frustrating, but I suspect unsolvable. If TOG needs to use less than a chapter's worth of material, they must in some cases use page numbers.

Having used another literature based curriculum for many years, I know they also had users who had problems with different editions. In the case of this other company, they firmly told such users that they should buy their books from their company to avoid such issues.

The only real solution is to look at each book if you are on a budget and try to buy identical editions of what TOG uses for books that are used extensively and use mostly page numbers (Norton Anthologies would in my opinion be a great example of a book where buying the exact edition will save you tons of aggravation). Other books are used almost totally with chapter references those would make great candidates for buying a cheaper version if you can find one.

Hi ladies,
We are aware that there are several editions of some of the books that we use, so, as Pat says, we try to put chapter numbers when possible. If you are using a different edition from the one we suggest, it's actually pretty easy to figure out what to read for music and Norton's.

For music, look in the threads on p. 2 to see which composer is being read about that week. For Norton's, you can look in the Student Activity Pages or Teacher's Notes to see exactly which work is being read.

The Marshall books are harder to figure out because there are SO many editions...some with fewer chapters that our Yesterday's Classics versions. When page numbers are listed instead of chapter numbers, look at the last time the book was used and see where you left off. You can also look in the teacher threads (p. 1) to narrow down the topic.

We do try our best to provide you with direction in case you do choose to use a different edition. However, it's not always easy to do so. In the instance of Marshall books, I'd suggest that, unless you are under major financial constraints, to bite the bullet and just buy the one we recommend.

Hope this helps. Smiler

Dana,
It would be helpful to know which books it applied to. I bought some books through the Bookshelf and some through Amazon. I had NO idea that there were different versions of some of the books and my poor boys finally spoke up on Island Story and said, "What in the world does this have to do with what we are studying???" I certainly would make sure to buy those specific books if I KNEW that would be a problem. Is there any way to mark those books that people have trouble with the various versions??
