This week, dialect is assigned 76 pages of this workbook. That seems like a very unmanageable amount of work. On one page alone they are supposed to research and write and essay. How are they supposed to do all of this? The book looks very good but there is no way my son can handle that amount of work. Any suggestions?

Hi!

We chose to read the Constitution part of the book aloud and discuss it in parts along the way to make sure that everyone was comprehending. I chose only a few of the activity-type pages for the kids to complete and that seemed to work well.

Have a pleasant day,

Jean

We did the same thing. I saw a warning in the Glance for week 34, and figured out what we would do ahead of time. I mainly concentrated on the checks and balances of the three branches and the responsibilities of each.

I did the same as the above posters. In addition, I carried some of it over into the next week. The first week we covered legislative and executive branch, carrying the judicial branch over into the next week.

Hi,

I, too, did some picking and choosing out of this terrific book. I gave each of my three sons (11, 13, and 15) a copy of the constitution and a highlighter, while I had our copy of Our Living Constitution. We read aloud sections of the constitution, and discussed mainly the portions dealing with the three branches of government.

For written work, I chose to have them fill in copies of the pages that had spaces for recording the names of people currently filling specific offices (current Speaker of the House, Majority Leader, Supreme Court Justices' names, current cabinet secretaries, etc.) That way, they were also able to practice I-net research skills as they found the names.

In addition, we watched a great film (A More Perfect Union)from the National Center for Constitutional Studies. Here is the website about that film if you want more info. http://www.xmission.com/~nccs/constitution-week/index.html

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

Might it be possible for the TOG folks to break this down for us? It's a great book, but I've got to believe there is a better way to fit it into the week plans.
