I feel that it would be wise to supplement my daughter's lessons with some critical thinking exercises, puzzles and the like. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a 5th grade girl that has not been introduced to this yet?
Thank you for any ideas you might have to share. I just want to add that I got some suggestions on another classical ed forum, so thought I'd share them here in case others are interested. The suggestions are The Mind Benders Books 1 & 2 or Grid Perplexors from Mindware.
If anyone else has a suggestion, I'm all ears (er, eyes!) We've used the basic Building Thinking Skills books from: http://www.criticalthinking.com/index.jsp These cover a wide range of activities. They have tons of other stuff as well.

The Critical Thinking books are excellent. I have used the Mind Benders series a lot and find them very helpful in logical thinking. The A series is very basic; a good starting place. The B series is good for 4th through 9th or so. The C series is challenging for high school on up - I found several so hard that I had to start over several times - and I have been doing and enjoying logic problems since I was a girl myself. Note that there are 4 books in each series and each book in the series is basically the same difficulty. I would suggest starting with an A book to get a feel for what you are doing (unless you've had experience with logic problems before), then move to the B series. Doing 2 to 5 a week is adequate.
We've also used the Building Thinking Skills series a little. It was good, but we weren't able to fit it in as easily, so I can't tell you a whole lot about it. HTH, Janet, wife to 1, mom to 10 1graduated, 1R, 3D, 1UG, 3LG, 1little |
