She is dumb struck when left to herself? I have to tell her where her books are, when to do this subject, where the supplies are????? today didnt go well at all her 2nd grade brother is more independent?????????? How can I help her??????
I went over her w/ all of her assignments, logging them into her assignment sheet, but I think I'm going to have to do it in more detail? I have just been having her write in the subject title, and what is expected for the week, and how much each day for example Reading; A Place in the Sun Ch 1-5/ 1 ch each day/ SAP on FRiday Her trouble is if I give her the geography assignment, she can't find the items on the list? and which map to write them on , even though I have them all printed and put behind her weekly tabs? So how would I have her write this in her assignment sheet? I had her just write Geography / Maps for week 2 So How could I assign it more detailed? Maybe it's just developing the habit???????? It just doesn't seem like it's that hard, to turn to week 2, get out the map and the geography list, and write the items down?????????? I'm venting here sorry, please encourage me, she seems plenty old enough to figure this out! kim very frustrated kim Kimberly Boyenger in Kansas Wife to Vernon of 24 years Homeschooling mom to: Levi 24-married to Katie on 9/1/07 Luke 22-CNC machine programmer-operator Leah 20- Cosmetologist Lydia 11-5th grade ( adopted from Guatemala in 2000) Lance 7-1st ( adopted from Guatemala in 2001) |

Kim,
I'm praying right now that God give you peace and that He reassure you that He will provide what you and your family need in order to accomplish His will. Be sure you have given your daughter a good explanation of what you expect her to be able to do. If she still isn't doing it or says she doesn't know what to do, she may just be defying you and need consequences swiftly. Another consideration is how long your family has been working with Tapestry. If this is new to you, you should expect to take some time to transition from filling out her weekly planner for her day by day and checking off each item as it is completed to having her do it. That process took us a good six months during our first year. It was well worth it! Blessings, Monica "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 |

Has she been better about this sort of thing in the past? When my daughter was 5th grade, she could sit down with a stack of schoolbooks and work through them one by one, all on her own initiative. But when she was 6th grade, she suddenly lost all focus. She would get lost in her own little world. Her first-grade brother could organize circles around her.
Who knows how it will be this year? Today was our first day of studies, and it went well. Their brains do a lot of changing around this age, and sometimes it isn't pretty. I have a friend whose sixth child is now in middle school, and I think she's said that she'd just as soon skip those years. It's nice to hear that other 6th graders have reacted like this.
It is our 2nd week of TOG/ first year, but I've written my own curriculum in the past, and she's always had a check list? But I filled it in not her? Maybe it's just figuring out how things flow this year? thanks for all the input kim Kimberly Boyenger in Kansas Wife to Vernon of 24 years Homeschooling mom to: Levi 24-married to Katie on 9/1/07 Luke 22-CNC machine programmer-operator Leah 20- Cosmetologist Lydia 11-5th grade ( adopted from Guatemala in 2000) Lance 7-1st ( adopted from Guatemala in 2001) |

My daughter had a lot of trouble focusing on her work and following our schedule and and assignment sheet, much less filling out her sheet herself - and that was in our second year of TOG! Each child thinks differently and has different struggles. She is doing much better now in our third year, but it took those almost two years of gradually giving her the reins. However, it is still a struggle at times to do what is expected independently, and I have to be occasionally checking and reminding. We also had to come up with different ways to remember to do things - mnemonics, watch alarms, a stack of cards with one chore/assignment on each, a customized printed checklist (which we still use - the planner is too hard). We also tried to give her one place where all her books and supplies were - they still ended up all over the house, though.
Lots of prayer and trial and error are still ahead to get where we want to be. Keep working with her patiently and get her help to try things. Pray about it together daily. This could be just the thing to help her learn to turn to the Lord for help. HTH, Janet, wife to 1, mom to 10 2R, 2D, 2UG, 2LG, 2littles |
