For my UG she had to write something about the people we were studying that week that made them famous. If a person spans more than one week, like Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War weeks, then she had to know what made that person important for that particular week.
How much she wrote was dependent on her age, how well she was writing (as in motor skills, not composition skills), and her ability to comprehend. We did this in 2nd grade and I didn't expect much. Last year was 3rd grade and as the year progressed she naturally began to include more and I also required more. When it was time for us to discuss our history for that week we went through the people at the beginning of our discussion. If one of her pages was incomplete I would give her clues as to what important thing about that person she was missing to help her find the information in her materials. She had to find the missing info and complete the page after our discussion. As a little extra (but it was also extra work for me) I would paste a picture of each person in one of the top corners of the page. I got these from the Homeschool In the Woods Timeline CD. It's certainly not a necessity at all, but I just thought it would be nice for her to have a visual image to begin associating with that person. If the CD didn't have a person then I'd just find an internet picture to paste on the page. Hope I've been clear. It's just what we decided to do! Deanna |

Depending on how many are included in a week I have my ds7 complete a copywork page for some and orally explain who the person is for the rest. I usually find appropriate images on google images to use. You can see an example of them here at my blog:
