I've posted a few times about my UG (4th grade son) who is a reluctant writer. Thanks to many others' advice, I feel things are going very well. We are doing some copywork/lapbook sentences every week, dictation, and a longer writing project bit by bit. That in itself is a big PTL!

My question is in what to do with the longer essay that he has been working on for the last three weeks or so. The topic was life in a Viking settlement. We did prewriting one week, cutting and pasting and putting in order the next, a rough draft the next week, and this week a final draft. He has been dictating to me all along, although he worked on editing it with my help.

It is about 350 words, and there is no way he wants to attempt to write it or even type it himself. I guess I need reassurance that it is okay for me to type it for him at this point. But I wonder how I can transition him to doing more of the writing/typing on his own, and when to expect that of him?

Thanks for any advice or perspective you might have.

Hilary

When my similarly inclined son was about this level, I bought Typing Instructor and let him work through that to teach himself to type (I had huge doubts about whether he could do that on his own, but it worked great).

Now, he does almost all his reports on the computer.

Thanks so much for your input. Just knowing there are others out there with a similar situation helps. I'll have to put typing on his weekly list.

Thanks,
Hilary
