I thought it wasn't recommended to start teaching grammar until 3rd. Why does TOG schedule grammar lessons (WA) even in 1st and 2nd?

THe Grammar that is scheduled is very basic; nouns, verbs, etc..
BUT!! we use First Language Lessons by Well Trained Mind for 1rst and 2nd grade which is wonderful!
I've always started basic grammar in 1st grade

I am doing some first language lessons with my 3 young students, grades 1st and 3rd- with my oldest, I did some abeka, my 2nd child even less- but then jumped into Growing with grammar last year. I plan to go from First lang. lessons into growing with grammar with the 3 younger students, I really like it. It's basic grammar, written to the student. I did a review of it over at my blog, I'll link it here if that is allowed;

I've been very relaxed with grammar, but my oldest tested very high last year,go figure.

Can anyone compare FLL with Shurley Grammar? I've heard some really good things about Shurley.

I can't compare lower level Shurley to FLL 1/2. I have used FLL 1/2 with, well, I'm on boy #3 with it right now. I used Shurley 3 with Eldest and Yo was getting into it as well. Then I just got bogged down. Shurley was too teacher intensive. Great curriculum and all, but just more than I could handle. I had 5 kids at the time, I needed to simplify. So I found Growing with Grammar for the elder two. Whew! What a lifesaver!

Shurley certainly gives your kids a grasp of grammar concepts. Forwards and backwards, those kids are going to get their grammar. FLL 1/2 is an awesome, simple introduction to grammar. This being my 3rd time through, I'm yawning through it, but it works for the kids. None have ever had a problem with the material, have excelled through it. They were doing well with Shurley too, mind you, *I* just couldn't keep up with it all.

So I would assume that Shurley levels 1 and 2 would be awesome in delivering the concepts, just, in a more intense way than FLL 1/2.

FLL can be done in 30min or less...very often less. That means a lot to me, personally. The shorter time certainly does not mean a sacrifice of content.

I don't know anything about the other FLL levels though, I've only glanced at a copy. Sticking with GwG Wink

(I probably didn't answer your question much at all did I? I'm sorry. That's what I get for trying to post when tired, hungry and a lot going on around me Razzer )
