My 2nd grader has started her paragraph assignments in week 9 and 10 of level 2 (Yes, we did start Unit 1 last summer, and yes, I'm still on Unit 1--been one doozy of a year). The teacher's notes talk about revising and rewriting and revising and rewriting, etc. But, at this level on week 10 it says to write a paragraph and file it under "Completed Work." Does this mean her first writing attempt should not be edited and corrected, and then rewritten and edited and corrected? Do we start the editing and correcting process gently, by letting her just write this 1st paragraph and be finished? Or, are we supposed to do editing, correcting, rewriting all this week, too? I was initially going to let her spend at least a couple weeks having to rewrite, etc. But, I often overshoot what an LG student should be doing, so please correct me if that's going overboard.
I think WA is AWESOME. Thanks so much, Deanna |

Hi Deanna,
In level 2, it's not as big of a deal as in other levels. *However,* that is certainly a typo. In week 10, the teacher should go over the rough draft and help the student make corrections. Don't make a big deal about it, but do help her see words that she mispelled and sentences that may not be complete, etc. Thanks for letting me know about this! Blessings, Dana C. in TN "Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God!" Deut. 32:2-4 |

Great! Just let me ask for clarification about the typo. Is it a typo because it's not "Completed Work" and should take longer than a week, or is it a typo because the editing and correcting part was left out bit it should still be finished in a week? I've looked ahead and seen that new paragraphs seem to be assigned next week and after, so right now I've taken this week's assignment to mean that we should write, edit, and revise one paragraph this week, and start a new one next week. That is different from my original idea of spreading paragraphs out over more than one week.
I know that we have the freedom to adapt as we seem fit, but since I am still learning what to demand and expect in these elementary grades, your expert opinion is helpful. I am better off doing what WA specifies and gaining teaching experience myself, especially when beginning a new writing skill. Once we're experienced at paragraphs, THEN maybe I'll modify it a bit--and then again, maybe I won't! Thanks again, Deanna |

Hi Deanna,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond! It's a typo that editing and revising was left out. However, at this beginning stage of writing, if it is skipped with one assignment, they will certainly get lots more of learning to edit over the years. Sounds like you are doing a great job! Remember that drop by drop the bucket is full! Dana C. in TN "Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God!" Deut. 32:2-4 |
