We are starting Year 1 this year for my 1st grader. What do you do for reading practice? Do you check out unrelated, level specific books from the library (Henry and Mudge, etc)? Do your kids read the lit selections or Bible on their own? Thanks in advance?

You can set an amount of time each day for reading to occur. I mostly let my children pick what they want to "free read." I do have them read from school books as well althought in first grade there wasn't much in that category.

With my youngest, I have to assign it and oversee it. With my oldest, I have to make sure free reading doesn't take over school reading.

The key for reading practice when it's not part of the "offical" school year/curriculum, is to make sure it's fun for the kid. Whether it's Bible, GI Joe, or learning about scary sharks, the more they like the material, the more practice will get done.

We are blessed with a LG that reads of his own volition, but we would assign practice reading (in a fun subject) if this wasn't the case.

I also have my older girl (also a 1st grader) read to her preschool siblings. It seems to be building some confidence in her and also some more reading skills in my 4 year old. I also have a rhyme bible that is especially fun for her to read and easier than her regular one that I use in our curriculum.
