Hi ladies,
I am wanting to start teaching Latin in the fall with a 5th and 7th grader. I was hoping for you to tell me what Latin program you are using, what you like about it, and did you compare it to other programs before you made your decision. How are your children doing with it? Also, I know that Scott and Marcia do not sell a Latin curriculum but they did teach Latin to their children. Does anyone know what materials they used? I am looking at The Latin Road to Grammar and Latina Christiana. The Latin Road seems to have a lot of writing involved which worries me a little bit for my 5th grader. Does anyone know about the new program she has out called "The Bridge to Latin Grammar?" I am thinking that might be too easy for the 7th grader. Thanks in advance! Wife to husband for 12 years with 4 beautiful daughters (Hannah, Sydney, Audrey, Jessie) and to 1 sweet little boy (Matthew). Currently using: Y1U2 with Writing Aids Easy Grammar Teaching Textbooks Making Math Meaningful Calculadder Noeo Science Sequential Spelling Spelling Workout A Reason for Handwriting |

My son used Prima Latina and then 2 years of Latina Christiana. We liked all of them, and there is a video course available for Latina Christiana, which is a great help.
Now we are using Latin in the Christian Trivium. I think it is excellent, but I don't think I would recommend starting with that as your very first course. Molly in GA http://www.counterculturalmom.blogspot.com |

Hi! We use Latin Road to English Grammar. I started my 7th grade, 13yod last year in LRTEG. Although she has been developmentally delayed in the past, she has done well keeping up with this. She helps me in it quite a bit!
My 6th grade, 12yoson will start LRTEG when he starts 7th grade. I've held him off because the writing would have been too much for him. He did A Beka grammar through 5th grade. This year he is doing The Bridge to the Latin Road. This is not Latin. This is a review grammar program, introducing Latin roots and affixes along the way. My son likes the construction theme that runs through it, even though that is quite subtle because there are no pictures. He is already good at grammar, but being presented in a different way has been a good approach. It's not necessary for LRTEG. However it has been good for ds. It has dictation in it, higher level thinking while applying concepts, review, and intro into Latin roots and affixes, as mentioned. Also there is writing in it daily. DS is building his own grammar notebook that will be a great resource. We have learned a couple of new things that were not in A Beka, and A Beka is quite thorough! I feel that because of The Bridge to the Latin Road, he will be better prepared for LRTEG next school year, mainly because he will be more used to writing in his notebook. There will be less writing in LRTEG. The lessons in The Bridge to the Latin Road are for 4 days, so they could be spread out, which we often do. They are set for 36 weeks, but of course homeschoolers know how to extend that if they want. There is a yahoo support group if you are interested. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LRTEGfamilies |
