We found TOG when our oldest was already high school. Watching my youngers, though, has been exciting! We're looking forward to cycling through the second time starting next year.
What I think of as "ideal" would be to have TOG in your posession when you start homeschooling, and to have lots of time to look through it, organize it, maybe use some of the grammar books, and just get comfortable with it. I would begin teaching my children to plan their weeks out the way Marcia suggests, when they are 4th grade or so. Maybe also use some of the components, so you get into it gradually.
Then I would start full-steam when my oldest was 5th grade, so that child would have 2 rotations. Just my opinion.
Remember, though, that TOG is being updated and improved all the time! Whenever you get it and use it, it will bless your family. The Lord will work in your children, too, even without the "perfect curriculum".

We started halfway through first grade and have been very pleased! I would have started at the beginning of the year if I had known about TOG. We are in our second year and my K student begs to do history. My second grader's first comment this morning was, "Can we do history first?"

My oldest is 10th grade. I have also 7th, 4th, K and preschool. I wish I had started earlier, at least so that my oldest would have the full 4 year cycle ( we started with year 2), but we had been doing a classical education a la The Well-Trained Mind. At least my two youngest will get the full go around with TOG.

We started when my oldest was in first grade, and I am so thankful to have found this curriculum! At first I thought it was too much for us and that the kids were too young, but once I learned to pick and choose (I had to convince myself that we didn't have to do EVERYTHING!) and customize it for our family, I haven't had any second thoughts. I love it! I am already so excited as I look forward to going around with it again (and again!).
Thanks, Marcia!

We are about to begin Year One. Our oldest will be in first grade and we have a kindergartener as well. We also have a toddler and new baby due in a few weeks. Reading these posts has been encouraging as I actually get to start early like so many of you wish you had. I have wondered if it isn't too much for them but have learned a lot about how to apply ToG to LG students and make it fun. I hope we will be able to stick with this wonderful program all the way through our homeschool career! I spent 2 1/2 years researching curriculum before we settled on ToG so I feel like I have seen what is out there and this is THE BEST!

We are also looking forward to cycling through TOG our second time this fall. Our dds will be in UG and we are excited to build upon what we learned our first time through. We love TOG and are so thankful that it was available to start our dds at such a young age. Yes, we've had to learn to pick and choose (the hard way!) too. Our comfort has been in knowing we would be studying these same time periods again with TOG. Our thanks to Marcia and Dana for all your hard work!

Well, I do wish I'd started h/sing sooner, but I thank Jesus for this first year we've had together at home. My oldest is 10th grade....then a 7th grader, 1st grader, and little one under our feet
My oldest will be in 7th grade this year, and #2 will be in 5th grade. I will continue to use Five In a Row for my youngest two(pre-K & Grade 2), but plan to start each of them in TOG in 5th grade, to give time for two full rotations. The oldest will have one full rotation, and an extra year of Years 2 & 3.
