I wasn't sure where to post this question. I'm doing Y1 with 4 of my kids this year but my oldest is in his Sr. year and will be doing a hodge podge of other things. I am making him a reading list to work on throughout the year and would love to know what others think is a "must read before you graduate" type book. I am going to be having him do some writing with each book so I'd also be curious as to opinions about how to assign writing. I'm thinking of a preread author / time period report. Then post read, basically for the purpose of evaluation and accountability, I'd like to have him do some kind of evaluation of the work but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions?

Are you asking about in Year One? If so I think Homer's two works that TOG covers and the Greek plays would be my picks along with the Leland Ryker book, Words of Delight.

I'm afraid I wasn't clear on that. No, I am not talking about just year 1. I'd actually like to hear suggestions for an over all, "you must read these books before you graduate from high school" list. Bear in mind, that he has already done all 4 years of Tapestry so it would be things outside the ToG literature assignments. I'd also be interested in opinions on The Importance of Being Earnest, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, and The Scarlet Letter. These were recommended to me by a friend's daughter who is a college junior.

The Importance of Being Earnest, TOG has the D level read this play, it's light and fun. He could easily read it in a few hours.
The Picture of Dorian Gray, this I don't know about. Frankenstein, I read this in college but would not consider it a necessary book. and The Scarlet Letter, I found this dull as dirt. TOG does a great job of this so I wouldn't get concerned about it. If he was a future literature major, I'd discuss with him what he would want to read that he hasn't read. I think the only place I might consider adding is looking at one Thomas Harding novel (maybe The Mayor of Casterbridge or Tess, but both have very adult theme, but not detailed). Maybe Anthony Trollope's Two Towers. I have not yet done Year Four so I don't know what TOG does there and can't comment. Pat "The first qualification for judging any piece of workmanship from a corkscrew to a cathedral is to know what it is — what it was intended to do and how it is meant to be used." C.S. Lewis "One of the major flaws in some forms of reader-response criticism is that they tend to ignore the compact between author and audience, overlook that the author had some purpose and information to convey when he wrote the document, and assume that it is the reader who can and must decide what sorts of things, including what sort of meaning, one can derive from a text." There is a list at the Patrick Henry College website:
