Hello. I need some advice. We are going to be starting Easy Grammar this year. We have not worked on Grammar very much and my girls are going to be in the 5th and 6th grade. Does anyone know if it would be difficult for them to just jump in at their grade level? I would appreciate any advice!
Also has anyone struggled with including grammar? I do some but it doesn't seem like very much. I thought easy grammar looked really good and easy for me to teach.

Hi, Amy.
Easy Grammar is just that: easy. Your girls should have no problem jumping in. Every year of the curriculum has the students memorizing prepositions, adding more each year. I do recommend using the lesson order the author suggests. All 4 of my girls have used this program with success.
Blessings.

Good morning.

We used Easy Grammar (EG) last year and it was great! My kids increased their grammar knowledge quite extensively, which was shown on their Iowa test results. In fact, I chose the program because their testing revealed they needed work in that area. And, oh my, did their results increase!! Now, this year we need to focus on spelling...

My kids are in 5th and 6th this year, so I've already had a chance to go through their material to put their lessons plans in HST+. I noticed that the 6th grade book does more review and adds a few higher level concepts, so if this is your first year really concentrating on grammar I would start both with the 5th grade book.

Another reason I suggest the earlier book: my husband just started a new job as a higher level manager. His written grammar is, quite frankly, and to put it mildly... atrocious! He asked for a book to help him learn what he didn't in school so he wouldn't appear unintelligent. After comparing the 4th grade book (from last year) with the 5th and 6th grade books, I gave him the 5th. It went in depth more and really honed in on the rules without being too simplistic.

Something you might also consider is getting the corresponding Daily Gram (DG) book. It will provide daily review of common problem areas (capitalization, punctuation, etc.) and offer practice on sentence combinations.

Last year I used Excel to track their lessons, so I have the 5th grade EG and DG broken out into 180 lessons if you're interested. Or, if you have HST+ I can send you either the 5th or 6th grade lesson plans. Email me offline if you are interested.

Good luck!

I have used EG for 2 yrs. and love it! I just recommended it to a friend who also has girls going into 5th and 8th. I agree w/ Lauralee in her advice. EG "cuts to the chase" and streamlined our time considerably.

I agree that you can just jump in with EG.

I counted the number of pages that we would do and divided by the number of days I thought we'd do school (180 is standard). That gave me 2 pages per day. I think my oldest (in book 5) had about a week's worth of pages after we were done with TOG.

On levels, I would look at how many levels of EG are left and if you want your oldest to do it through grade X, then select her level of EG from that.

I think you could easily start them both in level 5 or both in their own level.

WOW! Thank you for the great response. It's always hard starting a new curriculum and knowing where to place my kids.

I did buy the Daily Grams I was very impressed when I looked them over.
Thank you again!
