Anyone tried making the cardboard loom that is in the arts/activities section on the website? Or the one in Old Testament Days? We're interested in this activity, but I'd like some tips from someone who has done it. How much thread does it take? How long does it take?

We did this. It all depends on how big the cardboard and how thick the yarn. We probably used an 8x10 with a thin yarn. I bought 3 skeins and we have some left over. My 12yodd completed several in several afternoons while I read aloud a literature book for story time.

This was a really fun project for my kids (10 and 5). Instead of weaving over-under, over-under, we made a cardstock guide out of an 8.5x11 piece of cardstock like this youtube video shows (if the link doesn't work, go to Youtube and search "weave index card"). It lifted every other piece of yarn so that the weaving was faster. Well worth the time to set it up. The kids weaved as I read aloud. Also, we used a wide-toothed comb to beat down the weave so it was tighter. We used a sturdy box like the TOG link shows, then duct-taped the yarn of the warp onto the sides (which was after putting the cardstock guide in place). The set-up took about a half an hour and the weaving itself took several hours. YouTube was very helpful for the kids and I to understand how different types of looms work.
