My boys wanted to make the Nile Reed Boat in the Ancient Egypt Make it Work! book (a UG project). We can't find reeds or dried grasses...and we tried with something that we found at Pier 1, but that didn't work out at all (they were too stiff). Has anyone tried this project with any success? My boys are so disappointed!

Hi! We made one last week and really enjoyed it. We couldn't find any reeds either. I just cut a bunch of the long, thin leaves from my miniature Siberian irises, bundled them, and hung them to dry for a couple of weeks. They were a little more "scraggly" than reeds would have been but we trimmed it up after we'd tied everything. It looks pretty good.

Did you try soaking whatever you found at Pier 1 in water to see if that softened it up? Just a thought.

In the meantime, have your boys help you pick out another project -- check out the Tapestry Year 1 Art & Activities web site. You obviously don't need to have a big project every week. But be sure to include 1 or 2 per unit.

Blessings,
Monica

I used something from a different book. It won't look as authentic as the Make It Work! book.

We used bendy straws, forty total. We hooked them together in pairs with the bendy ends on the outside. Then we used masking tape to tape the bundles together. We bent up the ends and spray painted a more authentic color.

I should note that I found the projects in Make It Work! a trifle unrealistic.

Thank you for this feedback. I did soak the reeds, but then ran out of time at the end of the week to actually try to get back and work on the boat! I may try this weekend with my UG. Thank you also for the reminder to check the website. I didn't remember that that link existed so we looked there too. It was actually helpful for my boys to see the picture of the Nile Reed Boat that was posted there. And yes, I agree, the projects in that book did seem a bit unrealistic....especially when my boys want it to look just like the picture. But we'll adjust. I am so glad for this forum, what a great help and encouragement. Thanks again.
