my R son would like to make some Indian food this week to go along with our study in week 10. I have googled for recipes and there are a million, mostly with terms I am not familiar with using ingredients I haven't heard of before! Has anyone made Indian food and if so, any links to easy recipes? We have access to several good restaurants here in town but I was surprised to hear him say he wanted to cook the food ourselves :-) Thanks in advance!

I found a lot of recipes here. If the link goes dead I just went to Better Homes and Garden and searched "Indian food". I did the same at Martha Stewart and got recipes there too, but hers are fancier. BHG are a little more basic. If you are not certain of a type of ingredient, post and maybe I or one of the others can help!

Laurie, thanks for this, that's a good resource! Ds and I came up with a compromise...he found a recipe in his reading this week that we will make at home, and we will go to an Indian buffet on Friday. Then, if we particularly like a few dishes, I can then search for the recipes by name and we can make them here at home another time. That way I'll know what I'm making and that we will like it ahead of time!!

That's a good compromise! We sometimes make "historic" food and it's just not as tasty as our food! lol Indian food has distinctly basic ingredients that make their food unique. Maybe you could even interview the servers about the foods you enjoy to learn about their unique ingredients!

I just went to a site and found not only some good recipes but some great info on Indian foods. http://www.sallys-place.com/food/cuisines/india.htm
Here was another site I went to that had some good recipes too. http://www.indianfoodrecipes.net/ Also, I had no idea what 'Khoya' was in one of the recipes I thought looked good (yes, it had a picture of it! LOL)so I looked it up on the Internet dictionary... It's reduced milk! The dictionary even had links to recipes on how to make it yourself. I hope this helps. |

This is the recipe I make for company. It is a little easier on the pallete too if you aren't used to Indian food.
We eat Indian at least a couple of times a month, but I grew up around a lot of Indians and ate it weekly in Kenya. We have sometimes substituted plain (non fat will NOT work well) yogurt instead of heavy whipping cream. I have also used low fat sour cream instead too. The sour cream has a better consistency I think. Sometime we add potato, carrots and cauliflour to stretch it and add a little veggie. Posted: Fri Apr 21, 2006 12:19 pm Post subject: Major Grey's Chicken Curry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, sliced thinly 1 medium onion, diced 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/4 cup curry powder 1 cup Major Grey's mango chutney, pureed 1 1/2 cups whipping cream 1 pinch salt green onions, chopped, tops only, for garnish Fry onion in oil until translucent but not brown. Whisk in curry powder. Cook for 2 minutes. Whisk in pureed chutney and the cream. Add salt to taste. Saute sliced chicken breast in a small amount of oil until cooked halfway through, about 3 minutes. Add sauce and simmer until chicken is cooked through, about 10 minutes. Garnish with green onions and serve. This is great served over jasmine or basmati rice. Serves 6-8 |
